It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

Hello!

Well Ottawa has been named the coldest capital this weekend! I have noticed when the Jeep starts cold it squeals. Not sure if it's normal since it's so cold out.

I have uploaded a video to see what everyone thinks.

You'd squeal too if someone started you up at O'dark-thirty on a sub-zero morning.

Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

I wouldn't even be able to squeal...because just breathing would take precedence...

Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

Every vehicle is different in cold weather. Belts, pulleys, check valves, etc. can all make funny noises. As long as the squeal goes away after a few minutes of loosening and warming things up I wouldn't worry about it too much.

From day one, in cold weather my 02's evaporative fuel check valve ball used to clatter... it sounded like a very bad lifter. My 02 also used to make the most ungodly, warbly, whistling sound for the first couple of blocks of driving, even after a normal morning warm up. The volume was in direct proportion to the gas pedal.

My 14 exhibits little if any squealing, rattling or whistling on very cold mornings. I'm actually surprised by that.

Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

This is a common problem for us north of the border; mine squeals like that too.

Here is a long / detailed thread on the issue:
Cold weather starting noise

Apparently it requires replacing some belts and tensioners.

Now that I know the noise, I also hear it very faintly when it's warm too, even in the summer; comes under somewhat mild acceleration. Definitely heading out to the dealer for this.

Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

1F here this morning and it squealed. Probably the belts being stiff from the cold, as it was short lived and did not repeat during later multiple stops and starts. No worries.

Re: It's Cold and the JEEP squeals!

It only does for about 30 seconds then it goes away. I will mention it to the dealer when I bring it in for an oil change and see what they say.

There is a TSB on this for the 3.6 related to the idler pulley.
