I think it was the dipsticks, in many more ways than just the dipstick.

Be sure to let us know what the deal is when you get it. If it reads right and all.

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

Mine is an AC dipstick; I've ordered the replacement AD dipstick. I too feel that it's worth the $18.00 to get it shipped directly to me - saves me having to make a service appointment at my dealer three weeks out, only to get there first thing that morning just to be told they're out of loaner cars (after having reserved one when I made the initial appointment). So then I make another appointment three more weeks in the future; come back on that day, leave the car and drive the loaner (a squeaking two year old Fiat 500 with 40K miles on it that reeks of stale cigarette smoke and is full of chocolate candy wrappers, some with melted chocolate still in them, all over the cloth seats including the driver's) to my work, where I'll get a call in the afternoon from a different service advisor than the one I left it with that same morning saying that they don't have that part in stock and it will be another three weeks before they can get it. So I drive the squeaking rattle-trap Fiat back to the dealer at the end of the day and pick up my Jeep that has been sitting in their parking lot all day unlocked with the key fob in the cupholder. The only bright spot in this experience was finding a full roll of postage stamps under the driver's seat when I checked the loaner car for my belongings before turning it in. Since I never mail anything any more, I might use the stamps up by 2025. If I can clean the chocolate off them.

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

Well either way is fine, but like I already said, you do not have to schedule a service appointment. Literally just call the service department, tell them the VIN and TSB # and they will order the new dipstick free of charge. They will call when it arrives and just go pick it up. I know 18 bucks isn't much, but if Jeep will pay for it and it's as easy as going to the parts counter then leaving. Plus in my case I'm gonna go to he dealer in a week or so and get my complimentary first oil change done. Works out perfectly!
Just tryin to save anyone a few bucks.

I agree. But at the same time I can't help but wonder why the hell they can't just keep the things in stock? I mean, it's a dip stick for God's sake. They can afford to have millions laying around in new vehicle inventory, but not an $11 part that every vehicle needs?

Yeah I'm not sure. There are Jeep dealers at every corner here around Chicago and I called my two closest ones. Neither of them had them in stock so I'm not sure maybe it's a brand new part or whatever or just an item that never really needs to be replaced so no reason to stock it. Either way it's certainly no rush and in my case will be waiting for me when I get my oil change done.
I am actually quite pleased with the service though. I honestly expected them to tell me that I would have to set up a service appointment just for them to look at it and then have to set up another one to go and have them replace it. Even though a dipstick replacement is incredibly minor in the grand scheme of things, atleast they are willing to just do it and all over a simple phone call Heck, I would have just bought the damn thing too, but Jeep just made it way too easy not to lol. Go figure :-)

Yeah, that's not how it works. Why have a bunch of $11 parts lying around when (normally) you only need 1 every X years? I mean how often does a dipstick get lost, stolen, or broken? In all my years of ownership, plus all the years of my siblings and parents, none of them have ever needed to get a dipstick replaced.

Jeeps on the other hand, leave the lot probably within 30 - 45 days of arrival.

So you stock lots of what you sell; it really is that simple, and has nothing to do with purchase price or value of said item.

If these things are the cause of all of this supposed, "oil burning", (and I'm not that sure they are), I would think they would be a bit more concerned about it.

From the date on the TSB it's a new thing. I believe it actually says this month (August). So obviously it's not like they will then be in stock at all the dealerships. I fact that's something they might do for a recall, but certainly not a TSB. So do not expect every dealer to all of a sudden start stocking the "AD" version dipstick. If a vehicle comes in with low oil levels or blue smoke from over filling then they will place the order and replace it under warranty.

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

Went to my local dealership and ordered the new AD one. Be here tomorrow. Cost was higher here; $22 plus tax. Parts manager unaware of the need for an updated dipstick. Not surprised.
