Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

wow, a dipstick arrived curled up in a box? Wtf. I just picked up my free dipstick today from local Jeep and it came in a flat package like I would have expected it to.
Very satisfied how Jeep handled the situation all without ever having to bring my Jeep in and 0$ out of pocket.

You have a sensible dealer lol unlike most jeep dealers, mine would have never been as kind as yours. It would have been 2 appointments and few weeks. Rolled in a box and $18 is easier than the saga it would have become with the dealer

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

I was one of the lucky ones that had the oil burning smoke on startup. I had the oil pan and windage tray replaced. When I discovered the dip stick read incorrect, Chrysler claimed that I was the only one complaining and they refused to do anything. Now I see this TSB. WTF Chrysler??? I complained while under the 3/36 so I'm going to demand a dipstick replacement when I go for my next oil change. This is one of my biggest grippes about Chrysler...crappy customer service.

I love my jeep, but will never buy another chrysler ever because of this sh[t.

Their recalls start on fire. I mean, what else do you need to know?

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

Thanks everyone! I thought it was odd when our 2015 Overland took more oil then I expected during the first oil change. Our vehicle doesn't fall in the build dates of the TSB, but does have the "C" dipstick and periodic smoke. I didn't make the connection until now. Seeing the picture of the different dipsticks, I now I know for sure that's the issue. I'll be glad to get the new dipstick and have this one solved!! Hopefully this was caught soon enough for us to avoid issues down the road. It makes me wonder if cats or O2 sensors will fail prematurely? Any thoughts there?

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

I'll have to go down and visit the dealer and order the correct dipstick, no big deal.

Too bad they didn't put the dimensions of the markings in the TSB, or describe just how much too high the markings are on the wrong one, as I've considered just taking a file and notching the sides of the dipstick in a couple places, as that would be much easier to read in dim lighting, particularly with fresh oil.

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

Factory full, the oil was right below the add line such that adding an 8th qt would bring it to the full line. I changed the oil and filter, and put in 7 qts, was the same.

The funny thing is my 02 WJ will have a level on the stick above the full mark on the 4.7 when 6 qts with filter change.

I note this stuff and adjust accordingly.

Next oil change put 6 quarts in and run the engine a few minutes. Turn off the engine, wait 1/2 hour and check the dipstick. Mark your add line. Add a quart, run, wait, mark your full line.

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

Wow - I don't even know what to say on this as this is one of the stupidest mistakes for a manufacturer that I can think of...really, and it took that long to figure it out. As others have said, they will check the oil level with he dip stick and add when going on a long trip. Certainly Jeep needs to improve their product feedback system to identify problems sooner and less costly.

Here in Canada, I told the dealer about the TSB for the new dipstick. I drove my Overland to the dealer, they looked up the TSB, swapped the old dipstick for the new one and I was on my way in 20 minutes! Ya' gotta love that!
