Its the dipstick! On the hemi

So finally after years they have determined that the dipstick on the Hemi has been the wrong size and that's why many of us show add a quart after putting in the recommended 7 quarts of oil in our Hemis. It also says it could be the cause of the blue smoke debacle. (over filling because of a wrong dipstick) took them long enough but at least the fix is out. Checked mine and sure enough I have the 53034186AC vs the later rev 53034186AD.

Wow, no wonder I've thought I had to and have always added 7.5 quarts of oil and every couple thousand miles found the level below the add line and added more. I checked mine and have the AC version too. I've had my Jeep almost 4 years and it's a 2012 so it took them this long to figure it out, wow. Thanks for posting this.

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

I was always skeptical of adding oil until the dipstick reads full. I was one to always base it off how much fluid I put in. If the recommended capacity is 7qts, I put in 7qts and wherever that reads on the dipstick will consider that full mark.
I have yet to do an oil change on my 2024 Summit, but I did notice that even when it was brand new the oil level was only half way up the hash marks. I will check the part number on mine when I get home. I didn't see it in the TSB, but does it say what years it applies to? Mine is a late built 2014 and I'll report back later.

Well you did the right thing, I was never happy with it sitting on add a quart so I put in another half quart to bring it into the hashed safe area. an extra half wont hurt anything but at least we know going forward it will be 7 quarts to full.
TSB applies to all 2014-2015 GC and Durango 5.7s built before June 02, 2015. Now that's a lot of dipsticks but the majority of people wont notice or care and wont get the new one.

No surprise... it took Jeep 9.5 years to admit to and correct their defective disc brake calipers and rotors.

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

So since its just a TSB, if we want the revised dipstick we probably have to buy it right? Or I suppose for those under factory warranty you could bring it in and show how the dipstick does not read correctly even after an oil change filled to capacity and they would probably swap it out. Maybe I will do that when I bring mine in for my free complimentary first oil change.

The wrong dipstick could have some serious consequences to engine life. I'd think they'd replace that for free. I see they're telling the dealer that it's reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty, which I'd assume means the powertrain warranty.

Re: Its the dipstick! On the hemi

Well, the info states it applies to 2014 and 2015s but when I had my 2013s oil changed right after I bought it used in January, 2015, 7 quarts only came up to the "not enough oil" so the mechanic added a little and kept rechecking the oil level. It took between 1/4 & 1/2 quarts to bring it up to "full"mark. Btw, it never smoked afterwards

I just checked my dipstick and it is marked with the "old" number. Should I order the new dipstick even though it's a 2013?

I think they would just give it to you under warranty but that would be a trip to the dealer for them to say ok then they would order it because they don't have it(checked this morning) and a second trip to go get it. For me id rather just pay the $18 (including shipping) to order it and have it show up on my porch. I have no plans to return to the dealer for anything so just easier for me this way. otherwise just mentioning next time you are at dealer for something else is probably easiest.

I agree, I think this should really be an RRT, something they check and correct if the vehicle happens to be in for other service. vehicles spewing blue smoke because of people adding oil to the full line due to a wrong dipstick is not healthy for the engine long term.

Silvermax, would you mind posting where you bought that dipstick? I see it at Moparparts but I didn't check what the shipping cost would be.
