Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 in the snow

You just wait for the right combination of hard-packed snow and ice and your mighty Jeep will be just another humble vehicle. Yes it depends greatly on the tires and also on the kind of snow you drive in.

And no...a car is not an investment.

She made it to 85, so she must be doing something right.

LOL!
See this a lot here in the Twin Cities.
Coming back from friends house early in the morning (2am) during a slight snow storm. Begins with blowing snow, so I set the cruise at normal highway speeds (I know if a wheel slips the cruise will cut out). No worries until I see snow start to accumulate on the highway so I cut off cruise and drop speed about 10mph. Of course then I get all the idiots in FWD sedans flying by me like I'm standing still (I was still traveling 55-60mph).

In a snow storm... Some people just don't understand.

The jeep has been pretty fun up here in Boston. Had to take the jeep out in a good pile of snow last night and this morning before it stopped and streets were plowed. The jeep is snow mode plus the weight of the 5.7 has been absolutely great. Even with the stock tires, relatively little slippage and I felt I had pretty good traction for acceleration. In terms of driving and handling, the car is great. As someone that parks outside, it's been great to be able to drive through an ~2ft snow drift without having to dig the car out either...

Any thoughts on the stock wipers? I found them to be pretty rough and ice way too easy.... Seems like the wipers sit way too low on the windshield to get proper heat and stay thawed if they aren't on high speed. To keep them warm enough means I need to take it off 'auto' and have it way to high to keep the front window warm and cook me in the process.

I picked up some Bosch wipers but haven't replaced them yet. Will probably do today/tomorrow before the next round of snow shows up Thursday. Anybody experience the same thing?
Unless you buy battery powered wiper assemblies to keep them clean and warm, I wouldn't expect them to help much over factory. The GC has always had rather crappy front windshield clearing in really bad weather, back to the ZJ. The REAR defrosters work pretty good, maybe Jeep wants us to all drive backwards in bad weather?

A front window heater system in the GC would be nice, but probably expensive if you don't want to see wires.

Even tires aren't miracles. Mine are ice speed record tires, but I ain't stupid enough to out drive them on ice/snow. They do allow me to maintain higher speeds when traffic is clear, but you have to constantly check traction even if you think the conditions are constant, and people who try to maintain speed on roads with bridges, creeks, etc. are just contenders for a Darwin Award.

LOL...
Usually when it is bad enough that the "rolling road blocks" have given up, progress isn't that bad... but then you sometimes need to stop and make sure the Subie, Exploder, Bimmer, etc. is OK in their ditch resting place and have help on the way.

Either way, not nice. I hate those smart cars. I guess the only good thing is if it ends up in a ditch you can just pick it up and put it back on the road.
