For those of you that don't understand how much damage a moose can do to a vehicle, google "moose vehicle collisions" and look at the images.

I'm not necessarily saying hit it. I've seen what a camel can do and I imagine a moose is similar. I'm just saying that very few people could pull off the manoeuvre shown in the video without rolling or ending up in a serious collision, no matter what car they're driving. I've seen all manner of cars with drivers of varying levels of experience come unstuck when they come across kangaroos, wallabies, cows, camels, eagles, bush turkeys, dingoes, etc.
Brake and put yourself in a ditch if you have to, but avoid aggressive manoeuvres or putting yourself in the oncoming lane.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee Moose Test -- Full Story

Here's a true story. About 10 years ago up here in the northland near lake superior, someone hit a moose. It came in the windshield and crushed the guy, was of course, freaked out, and pooped all over him. He being unconscious, aspirated the gift... Spent a long time on a ventolator.

You don't have to necessarily swerve back once you avoid a moose. You can go off the road and brake in a straight line until you hit something. Your air bags will deploy, and you'll walk away... Probably.

There's just too much myth out there. Around here, locals say don't brake when you see a deer in front of you. I used to ride a bike and so I learned to never let anyone tailgate me for long. I've braked down to near zero for deer before and they don't even get out of the way (in cars). I think the thought is braking lowers the front of the vehicle and worsens the impact, or the guy behind you hits you.. Either way, I see a deer, I hit the brakes and don't turn. I see a moose, I hit the brakes then turn.

Next tires I get for my Jeep will be E load rated based on this "moose test".

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee Moose Test -- Full Story

I just noticed that Jeep reduced the 2013 payload spec by about 300 lbs.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee Moose Test -- Full Story

I remember when I was a kid, I was going with a friend of mine with his dad to their cabin. He was driving a mint condition Chrysler (can't remember the model but it was a 4-door, very long vehicle. The "300" comes to mind but I don't recall if they made those back then). His dad actually owned 2 of those as well as a 2 door.
They had at least a 350 4 barrel engine. All of them were gold in color. They were built like tanks!

Anyways, it was still light out but getting toward dusk and my friend and I were sitting in the back seat. We heard and felt the car accelerate very quickly and we looked forward to see what was going on and we see a deer lined up right in the middle of the road. It didn't have a chance! He hit it with the right front head light area and the deer flipped and hit the top of the windshield on the passenger side and flew over the car. His dad calmly started to slow down and just said "I had to hit it hard, I didn't want it to just lay there and suffer". The car kept running fine, it had a broken headlight, a dent in the front and a dented top hood area. The glass didn't even crack.
True story!

Edit....I just remembered the engine size: They were 383's!

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee Moose Test -- Full Story

Well, if they add another 1000 kg and double the thickness of the windscreen maybe we could do that to a moose......
