Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 reliability - let's get better info

I'm not sure I agree with you about the sample size...my "other half" is an epidemiologist so I have a bit of exposure to this kind of thing. That's why I asked the question. And when the samples are "self-selecting", that can also skew the results significantly and quickly when the sample size is small. 100 respondents out of way over 100,000+ MY14 vehicle owners....

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 reliability - let's get better info

The studies your better half is involved in are much different. Far more complexity (number of variables and how they are interconnected) and far more ambiguity. If the disease being studied is fairly (or very) rare, this will also drive a larger sample size.

The research I've been conducting was designed from the beginning to make the most of small sample sizes. I selected a metric with relatively small variance. To mitigate the non-random sample we have worded the survey as objectively as possible and collect data going forward from when people sign up, not retrospectively.

Larger sample sizes would of course be better. But it's necessary to consider the specifics of the research design and the information sought before concluding how large the sample must be.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 reliability - let's get better info

New stuff this time. We've updated our reliability stats for the Grand Cherokee to include owner experiences through the end of 2014. Plus we've added reliability trends graphs. These indicate how a model's reliability has changed as it has aged, and how different model years performed when the same age.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2014 Grand Cherokee: 52, moderate
2013 Grand Cherokee: 17, low, small sample size
2012 Grand Cherokee: 52, moderate
2011 Grand Cherokee: 69, high

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2014 Grand Cherokee: 63, 5
2012 Grand Cherokee: 66, 2
2011 Grand Cherokee: 50, 3

We'll have further updates in May and in August. The more owners participate, the more comprehensive and precise these will be.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 reliability - let's get better info

So, how have these cars been doing lately?

Our reliability stats for the Grand Cherokee now include owner experiences through March 31, 2015. (Others are nearly a year behind.)

In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year ("low" is best):

2015 Grand Cherokee: 52, moderate, small sample size
2014 Grand Cherokee: 57, high
2013 Grand Cherokee: 19, low, small sample size
2012 Grand Cherokee: 56, moderate
2011 Grand Cherokee: 58, moderate

Plus, the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2014 Grand Cherokee: 65, 6
2012 Grand Cherokee: 60, 3
2011 Grand Cherokee: 49, 3

We especially need more participants for model years with small sample sizes. Next updates in August and November.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 reliability - let's get better info

Our reliability stats for the Grand Cherokee now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. (Others are over a year behind, and so report how these cars were doing when a year younger.)

Repair trips per 100 cars:

2015 Grand Cherokee: 52, moderate
2014 Grand Cherokee: 54, moderate
2013 Grand Cherokee: 32, low, small sample size
2012 Grand Cherokee: 55, moderate
2011 Grand Cherokee: 56, moderate

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2014 Grand Cherokee: 64, 4
2012 Grand Cherokee: 63, < 1
2011 Grand Cherokee: 64, 6

Additional participants always helpful.

With so many listed as small sample size, breaking them down into more categories might really cut down on the usefulness of the information.
