Jeep Loaner vehicle thoughts ( 2015 Trail Hawk Cherokee)

So my dealer lent me the 2015 Trail Hawk Cherokee.

Besides the front end of the vehicle it drives extremely well.

My questions are why does this vehicle have a 9 speed tranny, heated wind shield for the wipers and two usb ports for the Uconnect.

MY 2014 overland does not have any of those options. I find it strange that a vehicle which is cheaper to buy has some additional features which there flagship SUV does not.

I find a lot of things strange. Wait till you spend over a million dollars on a supercar and discover it has no automatic transmission, no air conditioning, etc.

Re: Jeep Loaner vehicle thoughts ( 2015 Trail Hawk Cherokee)

even though the Grand Cherokee is the flagship vehicle, believe it or not it never seems to be the first to get certain features. For example lighting. The Grand Cherokee STILL doesn't have rear LED brake and turn lights, where as much lower vehicles have had them for years like the Compass. Grand Cherokee certainly wasn't the first for the newer 8.4" uconnect.
The options you speak of might be something included in the 2016 refresh, or maybe not even at all for the WK2. i will say though, the heated windshield sounds like a damn good feature especially for us northerners where the wipers would freeze to the windshield.

Yeah that one always bothered me too. But at least the car looks and sounds amazing!

Re: Jeep Loaner vehicle thoughts ( 2015 Trail Hawk Cherokee)

I like to think that those options are being tested out on the cheaper vehicles and only become options on the Grand Cherokee once they have been perfected, but I'm not really convincing myself.

Not to hijack the thread, but apparently MOPAR does make something that heats the washer fluid. I do not have this and have no idea how well it works:

Re: Jeep Loaner vehicle thoughts ( 2015 Trail Hawk Cherokee)

While it was a more expensive vehicle, for many years the lower volume Pontiac was a test car for the Chevrolet brand. Oldsmobile served the same function for Buick and Caddy.

You try not to experiment on your best sellers or highest profit vehicles.

The nine speed transmission that they use is designed for transverse engines, so you don't want it in your GC. These are third party designs, by folks who seem to know transmissions.

Re: Jeep Loaner vehicle thoughts ( 2015 Trail Hawk Cherokee)

I wouldn't be concerned about the 9 gears. That transmission has so many issues. Besides, the GC has 8 gears. Which is still more than others in its class.

Re: Jeep Loaner vehicle thoughts ( 2015 Trail Hawk Cherokee)

More speeds does not equal better. The ZF8 speed and the ZF9 speed are complimentary products not competing ones. The 8 speed is designed for high torque, rear wheel-biased operation. It is used in some of the best driving vehicles out there - Jaguar F-type anyone? The 9 speed is designed for lighter duty, transverse-engine mount, front wheel biased application.

There is no 9 speed from ZF that will work in a Grand Cherokee, next generation Wrangler, or RAM, Challenger, or Charger. Under current manufacturing processes, ZF has indicated that additional gears will not improve efficiency or performance beyond the designs they have in place. As far as I know there are zero plans to develop a 9 speed that will work in rear wheel-biased applications.

Re: Jeep Loaner vehicle thoughts ( 2015 Trail Hawk Cherokee)

A big reason is that the GC, while being refreshed nearly every year, is still riding on a 2011 platform, while the Cherokee was new for 2014. They can only add so many improvements to the platform before they introduce a new model. Expect major changes when FCA finally gets around to releasing a new GC.

My Limited that was just built apparently has LED lights in the rear according to my build sheet:

Code: Description
LAYS LED Tail Lamps

Cant confirm until I take delivery though.

On another note do any of the other models have acoustically laminated windshield and door glass?
