Jeepless! Need expert advice on purchase of a 2014 GC 4X4 for specific use.

Since selling my 1968 Road Runner 38 years ago, I have never owned another Chrysler product. Now this "Ford Guy" finds himself in the market for a 2014 GC 4X4 and seeking advice from all of you expert and experienced owners for guidance. I have become a premium member to help support Jeep Garage and continue participating after my purchase.

DUAL-PURPOSE REASON FOR PURCHASE
Must have at least Quadra-Trac II to enable it to be flat-towed behind a motorhome.

Need to tow and launch our 24' pontoon boat (5,000 lbs when loaded) at the Colorado River in Arizona where summer temps may average 113 degrees (The pontoon will rarely be towed long distances as it's stored where we boat).

QUESTIONS
1. Is the new 6,200 lb towing capacity with the V6 really enough to comfortably tow 5K?

2. Will I be more satisfied w/the V8 Hemi getting on the freeway, passing, and towing (I have an Expedition right now so I'm use to bellying up to the gas pump)?

3. Is the diesel option worth the price if your annual mileage is 12-15K, but anticipate keeping this vehicle at least 8 years (I have never owned/driven a diesel powered vehicle)?

4. If necessary, are Jeep dealers open, accommodating, and flexible in price if one needs to do so or do you get your best deal off the lot and when is the best time to buy?

MY CURRENT POSITION
I'm leaning toward the 2014 Overland 4X4 V8 Hemi (Okay, I'm spoiled with my Expedition's A/C cooled seats) and not in a rush to purchase. So, what do you think?

1. Yes, it should be fine
2. You need to test drive to give yourself the best answer on that.
3. 8 yrs, possibly..
4. Yes, you can negotiate pricing. There are many group buys going on or dealers willing to do 3% under invoice

Seems like you currently have your mind set on what you are looking for. If MPG is t the biggest concern for you, the Hemi would be a great choice.

You know the '14 Grand Cherokee has cooled seats as well (not a/c-cold but it feels good).

From what I read in your post, a '14 Overland V8 may suit you just perfectly.

Go to Jeep.com and request a paper brochure. Some who have done that have rec'd either $500 or $1000 coupons.

HEMI: You’re right, test driving is only way to be sure. Especially since I'm use to decades of V8 driving. I’m retired, but my wife will still be working for the next 3 years. So while the price of gasoline ($3.95 – 4.13 in So Cal right now, but paid $3.59 during trip to AZ last weekend) may not be a big concern now, it MAY be when she retires. She has a take home company FD vehicle right now, so that helps.<O</O
DIESEL: Not really feeling the need so far.<O</O
PRICING: Will look through the Forum regarding “group buys.” My ability to grind down a sales manager to below invoice has helped me to get a decent price in the past. Every little bit helps because we have a 9% sales tax in my area as I live in The People’s Republic of California.

Thanks, Copefree. I’m thinking I’d like the ventilated seats just as well. We spend a lot of time in the desert during the summer months, so it helps a bit.

Thanks, bill de. Last time I was on the website, I only downloaded the PDF brochure. Am going to go to the Jeep website right now and request.

Our local Jeep dealer has the one my wife likes in stock, a 2014 Overland 4X4 V8, True Blue Pearl exterior with Light Frost interior.

f1anatic, your image depicts a white background that apparently converts the white lettering to black. The colored words are only used to emphasize certain subjects and amuse myself. I have posted on similarly formatted forums, such as the Bullitt Owners Club, with no problems for years. Sorry about that. I didn't realize anyone used this method. Guessing it's easier for some to read posts that way.

Clancy, if I were you I would start looking around now but wait to pull the trigger in a month or two. The ucconent / nav screen seems to have a very tiny issue where a few people on this forum have complained about it locking up. I can't see it taking too much longer to get a fix out, but then again, writing code can take along time. Also, the rear tailgates are sometimes a little to far over to one side, so check that out as well.

Since you are actually towing something, might as well go with the v8. As of late, my dad Hemi gets roughly 3-4 mpg worse than what I get in the v6.

Lastly, get the air ride suspension. You're retired so I'm guessing you're over 55 and getting these SUVs to drop about an inch is huge when my mom gets into dads overland. She's over 60 and it just makes it that much easier to get in.

I'd agree with the sentiments of "Get the QL and cooled seats".

If the fuel economy isn't as big of a concern as the enjoyment and long term reliability, I'd go with the Hemi. The CRD may be a great engine, we don't know, and right now it's only used in the US on the GC. Jeep doesn't have a great history of maintaining unique engines, especially diesels. That said, the new 8 speed transmission is also a new piece of equipment, that also hasn't seen 8 years of use yet.

If you're looking to be 100% confident that the truck you purchase will be up tot he task, I'd get a leftover '13. It's still a great truck, you could get an amazing deal on it, and you've got the Hemi which has proven itself, and the 5/6speed auto that has been proven over the decades. You get simpler and IMO better looking interior, but you do lose the bigass touchscreen.

Good luck, these really are great trucks whatever you choose.

If you have a track record of V8's then go for the hemi. I am like you and have always went for the v8. Tried a v6 once and I will never go back. Remember there is no replacement for displacement. Besides the difference in gas mileage isn't that much.
