This thread shouldn't even exist.

CRD and/or EcoDiesel sound cooler than TDI.

Case closed.

Plus, it looks cooler too...

VW interior....LOL. Does anyone else think this looks like a 1990s interior? Barf! Fake looking wood...looks plastic. the dash is horribly 90s looking.

exterior-----SNORE BORING! The headlights look ok...but all those vertical slats....again looks 90's to me

again...never driven one....but for $54k....I want something that atleast paases the eye test for 2014.

Scott, stop posting stuff that I agree with.

But in all seriousness, Volkswagen has seriously lost their way from a design standpoint, interior and exterior. Chrysler, before they got theirs back, didn't even go down THIS bad.

Re: JGC CRD vs. VW Touareg TDI

I agree Scott- the VW interior looks dated. Very few vehicle interiors compare to the WK2.
That's what sold me on my 2011....sometimes I still can't believe it's a Jeep!

Re: JGC CRD vs. VW Touareg TDI

We went and drove a Touareg a week ago. I had just planned on driving it to see how a diesel 8 speed felt to drive ... Came away more impressed than planned. We then went to Jeep and drove a MY13 Overland just to compare feel a bit (I have driven the JGC multiple times prior in various models).

The JGC seats are very hard in my opinion ... Hoping the MY14 has changed in that area a bit. Both cars were similar in road noise and the Jeep rode just a touch firmer (but not in a bad way). The Jeep is noticeably larger and especially wider even though specs don't show a huge difference. The cargo area is a bit larger as well. As stated prior no cooled seats in the Touareg ... No wood steering wheel available. You have to get the Exec trim to have keyless entry and push button start as well as heated rear seats. This makes for about $8-10k more over the Overland or loaded Limited. The Jeep rear seats recline about 10 degrees further than the Touareg. The tech features should be better/more updated than the Touareg's. The dash and gauges should appear more pleasant and up to date on the Jeep as well.

I came away liking the Touareg more than I'd planned ... Actually I didn't plan on even considering it at all. However for $10-8K more and less features it'd be hard to go for the VW. There is the 3/36 service - that's nice but not a lot of money in reality. If the VW had slightly better cargo space and more interesting tech features it'd be tough to beat. Fuel economy is +1mpg highway and there are tons of reports of people achieving 32mpg+ on the highway. I do like how it looks even though it is a touch bland. I like that it's understated but then again if you buy something that stickers over $60k you maybe want something that makes a statement.

Plan is to check out the MY14 JGC in person, especially the interiors and the Billet Silver Limited exterior and Brilliant Black Overland exterior, and then go from there. Definitely going diesel at this point.

The Touareg's interior reminds me of...

Marlon,

Just wondering, normally the Overland badge goes below the "4X4." So on the Overland models that have the CRD, where does Overland badge get applied?

I'm a fan of the overall design of the new interior for the Grand Cherokee. But not all 2014 JGC interiors are finished out as well as the photo you link of the new Overland interior.

I spent almost an hour with the JGC Limited (Billet Silver Metallic, Lux II package) that has been on display at the Detroit Auto show this past week. Nice interior. Great electronics and media system!!! But the interior finish on this early 2014 Limited is a step or two down from the Overland (and from other other competitors in the $50k diesel class, I think). Lots of plastic in the dash, doors and cargo area of the Limited...and the plastic dash does not even have the nice subtle, textured finish that I have in the dash of my daughter's 2010 Prius (at about half the price). The wood in the Limited I saw in Detroit is bland. And what is with that big plastic panel in the seat backs of the new JGC? That seat back reminds me, unfortunately, of a nice seat on a bus, and I wonder if the plastic color and finish of the seat backs will age well with the perimeter leather trim. Finally: the paddle shifters on the Limited at the Detroit show were a cheap-looking beige plastic---I hope that this was just a rushed "beta release" version of the Limited for the show floor---that stood out on the dark colored steering wheel (which has no wood).

Honestly, I like the new JGC interior and I think I can live with some of the flaws of the Limited/LuxII. But the Touareg, if you get a good price, is a worthy competitor to the CRD...and I am still not 100% convinced that Chrysler will support the diesels as well as VW.

Not on the '14s. Overland badge goes on the right side now. Same for Summit, Laredo and Limited.

Interesting. The Overland at NAIAS shows it on the left side. They must not have got the word on where it goes for the new '14s .

Didn't happen to get photos, did you? I think a lot of us are wondering how the Limited + Lux2 compares to the Overland interior.

RIGHT...but I wasnt comparing the vw to a limited. The touareg is actually in the overland and summit price category...which is why I showed the overland interior. The VW is $54k+. I wasnt speaking to perfromance either...merely MY eye test. Its proven the 2011-13 Overland interior is a top interior in the world! Not my opinion or yours.....but someone who judges things like these for a living. The jeep interior was a top ten in the WORLD and I see no mention of the VW.

Interesting, Bucky. I guess we will figure it out at a later date?
