Re: Just boggles the mind

The best price anyone would give me to add Nav to my 8.4A was still 3-4x the price of great garmin with Lifetime Traffic and Map. So I rock the Garmin on long trips.

I'll just use my phone with Gmaps in a pinch and can hear the directions over bluetooth that way.

No way they were getting more money out of me for a outdated inferior mapping system.

Google maps / nav on my cell phone FTW. Easier and more accurate than the factory nav.

Re: Just boggles the mind

Out of curiosity (not to sound condescending or negative) but how many of you actually use your navigation? I live in a tiny country so navigation is practically pointless and we don't get realtime traffic updates on our navs. Google maps shows traffic though.

I'm just curious because I'd assume 90% of the time people know where they are going unless it's some sort of road trip or somewhere new. So I was curious to know how frequently do people use their navs? To be quite honest, I basically use mine as a wallpaper/screensaver I guess. It's more decoration than usage.

I also think if you're going to pay a premium for nav, it should be worth the money (not outdated or ugly or a pain to use/update). I just notice lots of people use google maps over their nav. I do too when I look for traffic updates.

I liked the idea of Apple CarPlay, but it's a great idea for Apple fan boys and I like the google version as well but again it's only mainly for google fan boys. I think though that the idea of buying your phone because of your car or vice versa is silly. I can't wait till there are proper quality after market units that will work with both platforms.

Full disclaimer, I work in app dev amongst other things so I function on both platforms (android and iOS, we don't really have a significant market here to have windows dev) and I understand the headache behind it all. But, surely they should be at least able to give people who buy their vehicles the options to use all different kinds of devices on one unit in a similar fashion. I think we're moving in the right direction with having our car entertainment systems fully integrated with our phones. However, I don't like that we're going to be stuck to one. Even if I get a choice when purchasing my vehicle, who's to say 2 years down the line I don't switch my phone platform? What if I'm an iOS user and my wife or kids (who are currently non existent) use Android? I'd assume as a family man, I'd pay a premium for a system that functions on both.

I'd like to see a system that functions on both, and loads up the relevant car play based on the phone tethered to it.

Just a thought...

What do you all think of the new car systems by apple and google?

Joe, I use my NAV somewhat frequently and not always because I need it to find someplace...it's also handy in judging travel time even when I know the route, etc.

Hey Jim! Yeah I figured most people use it for traffic or to see shortcuts. I was just curious. Since Kuwait is tiny, you eventually learn every possible road after a month of living here.

Yes, I can appreciate that your location might be relatively easy to navigate by eye. LOL When the wind isn't blowing hard, at least...

When I hear people talk about using smartphones instead of GPS units for navigation, I can't help but think, "There's somebody who must not venture outside of cellular coverage very often."

Indeed, M-B charges us 250 for the updates to the GLK.

I'll pay it, I don't want some damn screen hangin via suction cup from my windshield

Hahaha yeah dust storms are a bitch.. but to be honest, we still don't bother with navigation as long as we have about 5 meters or so of vision

If you use an app that has preloaded maps you don't need a cell connection for the GPS to work and guide you on the map. At least on an iPhone it works that way.

Re: Just boggles the mind

Right, there is no reason that a smartphone could not do offline navigation now that they have real GPS receivers, fast processors, and lots of storage. Some of the GPS vendors sell their own phone apps, which cost less than a standalone unit (but not necessarily a lot less). But that isn't how I see most people doing it, and the no-charge services want all the marketing data they can get so their offline support will probably always be limited.

That said, I'm probably in the minority on cellular coverage. I spend a lot of time with spotty service. In fairness, one of those areas also has spotty GPS maps, so I guess needing a cellular connection vs spending hundreds of dollars on map updates vs a cheap standalone unit with free updates doesn't matter when the roads don't always show up.

That's why I have the TomTom app for my iPhone...I only use it in rentals since I have NAV in both of our vehicles, but I bought that app instead of others because it has an integral database and doesn't require cell coverage to work.
