Just boggles the mind

Garmin nüvi 42LM with Lifetime Map 4.3" GPS Deal of the Day | Groupon

The entire unit will run me like 70 bucks with lifetime map updates and the maps for our unit will run us $150 per map update.

Help me understand that logic.. I mean besides the logic of charging people needlessly to make money. Just bothers the hell out of me that my in dash Garmin map update costs me 2x per update vs this unit.

Business 101

"Charge what the market will bear".

People, myself included, are willing to pay relatively big bucks for in dash navigation. After that it's "In for a penny ... In for a pound".

The $150+ update for in dash units is pretty common, it's not unique to Chrysler/Jeep.

What Bill said..."because they can". Pretty much the case with almost any integral NAV in a vehicle.

It might very well be, it was just aww shit moment when I saw the full unit for sale with the lifetime map update for half of the price of one update.

Just venting I guess.

Mostly anymore I use my cell phone - its Sat-Nav is realtime and voice actuated. Have a BT connection so uses the radio to speak and mirror mike. Mount fits in CD slot. Also has 14GB/500 albums on an SD card. Phones are getting really smart.

I hear that. I have been doing that lately bc I have yet to order the updated maps and the current map is always different (and by different I mean longer) than google maps.

Also, the whole, "you can't turn off your car for 2 hours" while installing is just absurd to me.

That's actually not true. You can turn off your JGC as many times as you need to. The map installation will just continue where it left off when you turn it back on.

Allegedly it may be going away in favor of using tethered smart phones, etc.

Seems that the profit on Nav systems isn't all that much to write home about, and they tend to be obsolete by the time the vehicle is released for sale.

Pluggable NAV modules where there was an interface physical and logical standard would help, but the volume probably still would not be as high as standalone GPS--which are now offering stuff to try to keep the market share smart phones are quickly taking over.
