Just Curious... DuPont Protection Package and Tire & Wheel Protection

I picked up my new Summit from the dealer last night. Of course they tried to sell me on everything they could. I didn't bite on anything. I was curious how many of you who have purchased your vehicle have paid for the dealership offered DuPont Protection Package and the Tire & Wheel Protection? I know these are all just money makers for them. Has anyone purchased this and felt really good about their decision?

I think the DuPont protection, which is supposed to be for 5 years, will just wear off after a few months. For the price they charge ($695), you can just go get a good protective wax on it every 6 months and you would probably have more protection.

Re: Just Curious... DuPont Protection Package and Tire & Wheel Protection

LOL... of course they would!

I had Simoniz System 5 (same thing) applied to my 2008 Honda Accord when I purchased that new. Surprisingly, going on 6 years with it and it's done a pretty good job of preventing bird crap and tree sap from etching the clearcoat.

My issue has always been getting the front loaded up with bugs and the inevitable rock chips. The dealer gave me a couple of small bottles of the Simoniz and I'd reapply it to the front 2-3 times a year. That made the bugs come off a lot easier and prevented them from etching the clearcoat. Of course, a good coat of wax will do the same thing.

I was looking at the clear bra material (Xpel?) the other day. Looks interesting and would help with the rocks and other crap that get kicked up. The price seemed kind of high to me but I can definitely see why it would appeal to owners.

Purchased nada of that kind of stuff for the past x number of vehicles. The only exception I made this time around was the Mopar/Chrysler Max Care Lifetime Service Contract, but I didn't buy that from my dealer...got it substantially less expensive online.

Congrats on your new JGC, BTW!!!!

Thanks Jim! The sun just came out and I am going to try and get some pictures. So glad I did it, although I am a little concerned because I see the defect or "feature" that a lot of people with the granite crystal color have in their paint.

I am really considering the warranty and my dealer said he would give me a lower price than the Ziegler prices. Doesn't matter who I buy it from, right? It will be the same plan either way? I am leaning towards the 7 or 8 year Max Care plan.

One other thing to point out...

The dealer applied paint protection is expensive, no doubt. It's not so much a matter of how well these paint protection applications work, it's a matter of how well they're applied.

When you have the dealer's minimum wage detailing kid doing this, well, use your imagination.

You can buy a Mopar/Chrysler extended service contract from any authorized source...and if your dealer will give you a competitive price, that's always a good choice as long as you like your dealer.

Re: Just Curious... DuPont Protection Package and Tire & Wheel Protection

In the trade, it's called "Mop & Slop". Huge profit margins for applying a quick paint sealant or rust proofing underneath the vehicle.

If you don't want to wax it yourself, take it to a good auto detailer and they will take care of it. Most vehicles these days don't need rust proofing unless you live in a very wet climate where salt is used on roads.

Paint protection films like Xpel or Clear Bra are fine, a bit expensive to apply but they really do offer protection from road debris, bird droppings, etc.
