Re: Keep it or sell it?

For as expensive as these vehicles are I was trying to keep my payments affordable. I could've traded both my 02 GC and 08 Accord towards one but the payments would've still been a little more than I wanted to make. So I decided to try a lease for the first time. I traded my 02 GC as a down payment on a 14 Overland and kept the Accord.

My lease was for 3/45K and my monthly payment was lower than if I had bought it outright. I also didn't have the expense of having to buy an extended warranty or take the hit of paying the full sales tax on a purchase. That adds up.

At lease end it can be a crapshoot... good some years, not so good in others. So I was a little nervous what would happen at the end of mine. My buyout on the 14 was $24.5K. Two months before lease end my dealer had some good incentives going so they threw some numbers out for the 16 HA I have now.

They gave me $31K for my 14, so essentially I got back my original down payment and more. I have the same lease term on the 16 as I had on my 14. My payments are $28/month more than I was making on the 14. Considering the price difference between a base 14 Overland and a 16 HA with advanced tech and HK audio I didn't think that was bad at all. So I signed the line and drove home with the new one.

When the lease ends on the 16 I'll look at how good or bad the next lease term will be. If not good, or if I don't like what FCA unleashes with the next generation, I can always buy what I have now and continue driving it. After all, it is a badass looking Jeep.

Re: Keep it or sell it?

Im going to explore the lease route. Ill contact the dealership I purchased my current vehicle from and see what rates theyre going for.

Now to figure out if I get into a '16 or wait for the '17. Ill be watching the Jeep website to see what sort of incentives they release for each vehicle.

Re: Keep it or sell it?

Still don't see the point of getting into a 16-17... They are essentially the same car so what's the point you have to pay taxes and tags and fees on the new one depending on the state could kill any type of deal. This thread makes no sense. Just keep it, unless you are shopping for a totally different car.

Goal should be to not make monthly car payments. You start leasing now, you may never have equity again in future vehicles.

I tend to agree with that, have more of a reason to change. MY19 in only 2 years away and will be a new platform and likely have things to reach for (hopefully)

Whether you buy them or lease them changing vehicles every two years is probably one of the worst financial decision anyone could make. But I get that constantly sitting in a new car is what some people choose to pour their money into. So more power to you if that is what you want but I wouldn't try to show financial reason for it.

If you are trying to be financial responsible stay with what you have if you don't care about that and this what you spend money on then go car shopping for a new one.

While for myself I agree with you, the times they are a changin'.

Today more than ever people are choosing to rent housing instead of buying, Cars obviously the same thing. But it is becoming more and more true with things like software and music.

Your goals and mine, while they work for us, may not be the most popular in the future.

Re: Keep it or sell it?

In my case, my company gives me a car allowance to use on any vehicle I want. So the monthly payments are covered regardless. Of course it is more financially sound to hold on to a vehicle for a long period of time and eliminate the payments. Considering that point in time is 4.6 years from now and I know I wont be holding on to the vehicle for that long, im not concerned.

Im looking into other vehicle choices as well. Doesnt necessarily have to be a Jeep but its tough to find a vehicle with as much tech and luxury for the price.

In my eyes I have two options. Keep the status quo for another year or two; find a sign and drive lease that keeps my monthly payments the same but puts 9k back into my pocket.

Given that the current vehicle has already taken the biggest depreciation ( driving it off the lot ) and your loan balance is reducing wouldn't you be better off keeping the car a bit longer? Not only would I expect your equity to rise, down the road the new cars will have improved features ( Hopefully ).

Carplay, heated windshield, topdown camera, and LED headlamps are on my hopeful list. I won't buy another until at least a few of those changes are implemented. The thought of selling my '15 to get at most parking assist seems a foolish spend on the depreciation and taxes already paid. My advice is to be patient.

Re: Keep it or sell it?

Sounds like it's not a monetary issue, you are just not happy with the car. No matter how you slice it you will still be unhappy down the road, I've been there with my cars. Life is too short, get what you want and be happy even though it may cost a little more in the end. My 2 cents. Good luck.

Re: Keep it or sell it?

Personally, keep it keep it KEEP IT.If you have owned this from new you KNOW this SUV very well, every mile on it is yours.Like you note,it IS a beautiful vehicle and if you aren't a "keep up with the Jones" person, enjoy your vehicle with the hard earned cash you invested into it.These Jeeps are eye catching, best interiors you will find anywhere, reliable engines and transmissions that deliver endless reliability.Sure $450 a month is a good chunk of change,BUT they will stop one day, your Jeep won't.Trading in or selling to release capital to buy a used one maybe of a higher trim level sounds ok,but personally I wouldn't trade mine I bought new for an unknown entity. If you want to reduce payments, refinance and drop down the payments while keeping what,Afterall,is a great SUV.I STILL own my 1990 Wrangler I bought from new and would STILL hop in it and drive it anywhere,as I would our 2008 Liberty Limited (also bought new) same with my 2011 JGC (new) and our 2015 JGC.I guess my biggest point is I KNOW the vehicles as I/we put every mile on them, know all the maintenance etc and have learned to trust them completely.I understand you don't keep your vehicles for more than 2-3 years,so suggest, and again, everyone's opinion is different, keep this one and reap the rewards of a damn good vehicle.
On a personal note,I am itching for the new Jeep pick up truck to come out,I will be buying one in 2018 (when our 2015 is paid for) wife says one has to go,but not happening😊😊😊,reason I will stay with the same brand is all our Jeeps have been SO reliable.Add that into your equation and thoughts,is your Jeep, other than being great looking inside and out,the amount of $$$ you have invested in it,is it uber reliable? If it is,keep it.I am the first to admit I am exceptionally biased towards the Jeep brand because I NEED reliable and all 4 have delivered and delivered well since 1990.And Ofcourse, they are unique looking vehicles, sure a lot of people have them now as the pre owned market puts them in the price range of a lot more people,so,to me,that speaks volumes of how happy people are with them.Hahahaha,as you may of figured out by now I am a supporter of you keeping it😊😊😊.In your case, for future purchases I think you will benefit from a lease package, less money to lay out and can change every few years. But keep this one.You were smart, put a good chunk of change down and even if you took the 6 year finance option you are 13 months in.
In the end yours is the only opinion that matters.
