Silly me. I forgot about the keyless entry and start. I guess I'm used to them by now.

I believe it's because of the proximity thing...not sure if they are using RFID (which wouldn't need power or much of it) or some other mechanism. But given they do use batteries up, one has to assume that they are alive a lot more than the old fobs that only used power when you pressed a button. I never replaced a battery on those in all the cars I had them. It's only been the Prius my wife used to drive and my JGC, both of which had/have keyless entry and keyless ignition.

Re: key fob battery

I hate to semi-hijack this thread but I need to know how to open up the key fob so I can replace the battery. Any info will be appreciated.

pull the metal key out of it and there will be a divot near were the key inserted, place a screwdriver in there and twist and it will pop opened

Re: key fob battery

Thanks for the help opening the fob. I have replaced the battery now with a new battery but it still does not work. the battery I removed measured 2.95 volts. The battery I installed measured 3.23 volts.

Does a fob need to be reprogramed if it losses power?

Re: key fob battery

Right after I bought my JGC, I replaced the two batteries just as a precaution and no, the fobs did not need reprogramming.

Make sure you didn't put the battery in upside-down... (DAMHIKT!!)

Re: key fob battery

The battery is in right but I took it apart just to confirm (things have been known to happen). Yep it was in right but I took it out and put it back in.

I tried it again and at first nothing happened. Then the lock button worked but no unlock. Tried again and now unlock worked but then the lock button did not work. Used my other fop to operated the lock/unlock then went back to the one I was working on and then both the lock and unlock worked. I tried the hatch opener which worked then the remote start which also worked. Hurray!

This is all a very good thing because I called the local Jeep dealer and the service guy tells me that their software is not working and has not been working for TWO WEEKS!! and they have no way to help me. He suggested I contact another Jeep dealer in another town.

Chrysler Jeeps inability to resolve major continuing problems with our 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee cost them the sale of a 2500 Dodge Ram a year ago and now it is going to cost them the sale of a Chrysler 300 that the wife wants. I've been burned buy Chrysler once and once is enough.

Re: key fob battery

RElated question: If the key fob fails (for battery or other reason) is there a backup way to get in the jeep and start it?

For the 2014+ take the metal key out of yhe fob to open the door. To start hold the fob near the start button and then press the start button jeep will start, works similar to the proximity badge to get in doors. For older then 2014 i think the start button opens up for the metal key to go in it or something like that.

Just as a quick note there are a few videos on youtube that walk you through the battery change process
