Keyless Ignition Lawsuit - FCA among the sued manufacturers

Cars' keyless ignitions called 'deadly' in lawsuit - Aug. 26, 2015

The issue has also been reported and discussed here, mostly in the context of being able to drive away the car in the absence of the key fob inside the vehicle (e.g. in my case wife had the key in her purse, gets out of the car and I am able to drive the car into the yard without the key fob inside the vehicle).

Re: Keyless Ignition Lawsuit - FCA among the sued manufacturers

Don't see how they could win this one. It could be deadly if the vehicle commanded a shut down if someone (thief or owner without the fob) got into a car with the engine running and drove off into traffic.

I would say exiting the car after leaving it running or shutting it off is completely the drivers responsibility.

BREAKING!!!
"Key left in the Ignition Lawsuit!!"

It's reported that many people are leaving the vehicle running after exiting the car causing severe mental damage to the person if left unattended. Investigators have found that if the keys are still left in the ignition at the run position, the vehicle will continue to run. A report of vehicles effected by this can break records of over 500 million with vehicles dating back to early 1900's.

NHTSA has released a statement indicating a possible fix:
"All automakers will soon be releasing their electric shock key event. This event sends an electrical current through the driver door handle if the vehicle is in park, still running, and the driver wants to exit."

What about those who want to leave the car running? NHTSA responds with "Better think twice"

What about those who don't have a more recent vehicle? The Federal Safety Administration is telling those to go out and buy a modern vehicle.

Re: Keyless Ignition Lawsuit - FCA among the sued manufacturers

Product liability is strict liability ... has its pluses and minuses. Helps to make products safer and holds the manufacturer (the one that is the best position) responsible for designing and improving the product. The legal process however can be cumbersome, expensive and rewards lawyers instead of more fully using the capital on safety. Wish there was a better more efficient system for this.......

Re: Keyless Ignition Lawsuit - FCA among the sued manufacturers

My personal opinion is that this is yet another frivolous law suit that could only benefit the firm(s) that are managing it if they actually prevail.

Re: Keyless Ignition Lawsuit - FCA among the sued manufacturers

Stupid lawsuit for stupid people, IMHO.

I have moved the GC w/o the FOB when I move cars around in my driveway. It does let you know that the FOB is missing, the chimes go off.

Re: Keyless Ignition Lawsuit - FCA among the sued manufacturers

I wonder if there is an FMVSS regulation or somesuch that says the vehicle CAN'T shut down if the fob is missing, for exactly the above-mentioned "vehicle shuts down in traffic" reason.. or if the fob fails while you are driving..

Re: Keyless Ignition Lawsuit - FCA among the sued manufacturers

What's the difference with leaving the engine running with a key left in the ignition, vs. leaving it running with the keyless fob in your pocket? Stupid is what stupid does.
