Keyless N Go Fob question

New to the Forum, Thanks to you all for sharing so much useful info. I have a 2012 Laredo that did not come with the keyless N Go package. I actually insert the fob and turn it like any old school key. My question is, This fob is not cut any differently than any other. Assuming I have the correct fob in close proximity, would any fob turn and start the vehicle? They all appear to be identical in their ability to turn the slot.

Re: Keyless N Go Fob question

Just to verify, does this mean you can't unlock the door just by being in close proximity and touching the inside surface of the handle? If you can unlock the door without using the unlock button on the remote, then the vehicle recognizes your fobik only and the same should be true when starting the vehicle.

If you can only unlock the door by pressing on the fobik (or using the emergency key), then it sounds like the vehicle won't care what is used to start it.

All of this is just an assumption on my part.

As a test, what happens if you simply insert your smallest finger into the keyhole and push?

Re: Keyless N Go Fob question

Thanks .....I do have to push the unlock button on the fob to unlock the door. So there is no wireless recognition of the keyfob. If I push in the start opening with my finger, the display says something to the effect of wrong key/illegal key, I dont remember offhand.

So it seems unlikely that the pushbutton would start my car. However, it also seems that the insertion of ANY similar key fob would allow the starter keyhole to turn and therefore start the car. Assuming that the fob is close by. The turn being a physical action and the fob having no unique physical features. Oh well, just a curiosity. Not exactly hard to turn the keyfob. lol

Sounds like anything (a properly shaped piece of wood) could emulate the plastic end of the fobik in this vehicle to start the engine. Even without the fobik present.

Re: Keyless N Go Fob question

With the keyless, you can still pop the button off and see a rectangular recess the key fits in. I'll bet he does not have Uconnect either. Must be the one actual base model they had to build.

I wanted the towing package so had to take the Uconnect and the E group as well. Turns out I like it this way.

Re: Keyless N Go Fob question

Look through your settings as well. I have the base GC as well and I just went through my settings using the steering wheel controls and turned on the keyless enter and go. I also just stuck my finger in the ignition and pushed before they gave me a button. Try it out, maybe it will work

Re: Keyless N Go Fob question

I believe all the jeeps come with the push button. It probably wasn't installed by the dealer. Look for the push button in a plastic bag in the glove box or in the back of the jeep.

ehhhhhh not sure that would work...
the fobik needs to be in proximity for the receiver to recognize the 'key'...the fobik has a transponder in it... otherwise how would one prevent theft of the vehicle?

i am sure i will be corrected if i am wrong

Re: Keyless N Go Fob question

Thanks for all the ideas....i do have uconnect, but i do not have keyless enter and go on the EVIC. There is no button in glove box. When i push in with finger, the EVIC says damaged key.....
I am waiting to find someone with the same style fob and see if vehicle starts by using theirs and turning like i do mine. Assuming that my assigned Fob is in close proximity. Like Tybalt39 said (a properly shaped piece of wood)...might even turn it on. just one of those things that make me go Hmmm.

That's it exactly. The only reason the "finger in the hole" trick works is because the fob must be nearby. Try it again with the fob nowhere near the vehicle and I'm sure nothing will happen.

Re: Keyless N Go Fob question

My though behind my hypothesis was thus:

If the systems that use the information being "broadcast" by the fobik (touch entry, push-button start, etc) aren't in the vehicle, then perhaps there is no monitoring system in the vehicle at all. Perhaps only the basic remote functions are supported (remote lock/unlock, panic, etc). Otherwise, if the monitoring systems are still on-board, then it should be relatively easy to retro-fit the touch-entry and push-button start.

If the monitoring system is not present, then literally anything that could fit the slot and latch into place could start the vehicle.

A test: Before approaching the vehicle, remove the battery from the fobik. Unlock the door using the emergency key, and try to start the vehicle with the "key" (fobik)....
