Yeah yeah i Know their reputation but then again every manufacturer has their issues. I went through three 2014 WK2s before I got one that actually worked. Anyway, my understanding is the current LR RRS generation is unbelievable.
I'm going to lease a 2017 Sport model for two years and give it a shot. Certainly, no interest in buying it. I was also considering the Summit but since I already have an Overland I'm certain I will get bored of it quickly. It tends to happen to me and I must have owned eight GC's through the years so time for a change!
My 2015 Overland has been fantastic and I really have no complaints, surprisingly. Lease ends January 20th so with any luck the 2017 RRS's will be on dealer lots by then.
I'll report back my initial thoughts once I get it.
Good luck! My 2014 GC Limited lease is coming to an end as well. Problem is, I haven't found anything that really interests me. My wife wants the third row back, so I was looking at the Durango (Citadel and R/T), but I can't stand the stupid rotary shifter knob.
Couldn't agree more! That shifter is for woman! Sexist, I know....
Anyway, if the Rover didn't exist I'd be staying in the Grand Cherokee. Those were the only two that interested me. When the new gen Rover came out in 2014 I fell in love instantly!
Please post your impressions after you take delivery. I strongly considered that vehicle but went with a 2017 Overland instead. I've actually had very good experiences with Jeep products and the local dealer is very good. After two months, no regrets.
My wife is interested in a LR evoque and for her.... it looks enticing. My main fear is a dealer 2.5 hours away and constant problems that HAVE to go back to the dealer. I'm trying to steer her towards something with local support.....
I've owned 2 Acura MDX's with the dealer 2.5 hours away, and the best thing I can say is, they were both such solid vehicles that out of 8 years of having them, only one of my 2 had to go back once for a problem... They came and got it and gave me a new TL to drive while repairing it....
Ive been looking pretty closely at the new '17 Discovery that will be replacing the LR4. Might be time to switch it up and join you in the Land Rover family.

Back towards the end of 2015 my wife and I decided it was time to replace my 2008 GC and I thought that after having 3 GC's it was an opportunity to look at other options. So, we looked at Tahoe's, GMC Denali's and the Land Rover Sport. I liked the Denali but she liked the Tahoe better. She very much liked the Land Rover Sport but when we spoke to the sales guy and with the options my wife wanted (all standard on the Summit) the MSRP was well over $130,000. And, the LR had to be ordered with a 6 month wait. Way to much and the sales guy said that they will not discount off of MSRP. Way too much so we instead bought a new 2015 GC Summit that we got for $48,000. While I liked the LR Sport it was almost 3 times the cost of the Summit. Room wise between the LR and GC it was a toss up. Both are too small in the cargo area. My next vehicle which I will buy in 2017 will likely be the GMC Denali or the new redesigned Ford Expedition (supposed to be out in mid 2017). I've had Expeditions in the past and they were flawless. Three row seats (for the grandkids), 4wd, and a large cargo area will be my criteria.
I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a Rover. I just couldn't do it. They're nice cars, I'm sure owners love them...but a couple guys I've worked with had them. One sat behind me - I overheard many a call to the service department and him bitching about yet another thing that's gone wrong on it.
Although, my neighbors bought one a year or two ago - much entertainment was had and much laughter ensued watching it get stuck in the snow this past winter while my WK2 just muscled on through. It was hilarious watching them have to dig it out of their parking space, then dig it out after getting stuck trying to get back on our street. I just shoveled the snow away from the bumper, started up and off I went.
Absolutely one of their problems haha - it came with whatever stock street tire Rover puts on them.
That said, I didn't have too many problems on the stock Latitudes that my '14 came with. It was squirrely sometimes in deep snow, but I never got it stuck. It's a beast with a decent AT tire though.
In my limited experience in the NoVA area, your average Rover driver is clueless about driving it anywhere other than the concrete and asphalt jungle. When the neighbor got hers stuck in her parking space, she said to one of her kids digging it out, and I quote "I don't want any snow touching this when you're done.".
First time I have ever heard someone on a car enthusiast site say a car is nothing more to them than transportation. Really?
I have a nice house, 3 kids, a wife, and a dog and have no problems claiming that cars are still on my mind and take up some of my time because I enjoy them. Always have always will. No shame in that.
I know a prick that owns a RRS, have a bad taste in my mouth about the vehicle simply because of him, ha! It's quick (his is the top end model), but good grief, the seats are like concrete and it feels cramped. I'd easily buy an SRT8 first. Either way, at least you're not buying the RRS! Never knew anyone that did buy one and not hugely regret it after about 30-40k miles.
I'm not a Volvo guy but I think the new XC90 looks decent. You guys ever see the commercial for the new Mazda CX-9 I think it is? Thing looks surprisingly damn good for a Mazda. Atleast in the commercial it does. Maybe they really stepped things up on this latest model.
Tough Topic. As is on any forum that discusses another brand of vehicle. That said, as a rather proud (former owner) of a 2006 LR3, it really does live up to the hype....all of it.
Extended warranty did me well, mostly ball joints, control arm bushings, and Air suspension. Mileage sucked as it was 14-16 avg. Interior was great and I would say literally doubled the room of the JGC. I could completely reprogram pretty much any one of the onboard computers and air suspension with a $500 tool. The body was solid and didnt have plastic fenders like my Jeep now does. It was pretty much armor plated underneath and the air system was actually useful during offroading. Outside of my warranty work shown above, in 90K miles I changed the brakes once, fixed a clogged sunroof drain, and was left waiting for a tow truck after a water ingress into the trans computer. It took me anywhere, anytime, and was truly fun as hell to drive.
Most guys on my forum estimated setting aside $4500 a year for out of warranty work. Most were happy to get away with that so as stated it was a very high maintenance vehicle.
I love my Diesel Summit and will likely not go back to gas again if I can help it. I am however interested in the new 2017 Discovery and like some of the changes and miss some things from the past. Either way the interior on LR's IMO simply cannot be beat. I really appreciate the simplicity of the dash/console area and love all the new tech they put in recently.
Sorry if I wasted a minute of your life with ramblings, I don't often see much where I can participate so I figured I would throw my .02 in here.
the RRS is GORGEOUS, I hope you post back here and post pics/experience. Id be scared to own 1 as well, but that has been said by many about the JGC as well. Maybe they have figured out the reliability issues. Hopefully!
And of all the choices Im reading here, its really nice to see some style out there, so many minivans and santa fes. I think the RRS has 1 of the most defined styles of ANY suv. I'd also rank the X5 up there, Cayenne, maybe even the XC90. All very good looking vehicles. they have spent alot of time sculpting these and have done a very good job of it!
Of course I love the JGC but lets be honest for a minute. The RRS is a better looking vehicle. Its more chiseled, defined, its just sharper. The JGC is soft and rounded. More feminine. Like the Q7. Not that I mind that, but my preference is sharp body. Now keep in mind the XC90, Q7, and RRS are NOT mid priced SUV's, these are very expensive, even more so than JGC so you BETTER damn well get much more of everything to buy 1.
I think the JCG would be a runaway winner in the mid price SUV category but the price is too high. they have loaded the higher end versions with all sorts of off road cape that nobody in there right mind would use. how many summit owners are going to need rock crawling ability ?! Give it a basic 4wd system, keep it at $40K and theres no competition. A 3rd row would be nice too, hell even the XC90 has a microscopic 3rd row, why cant jeep ? less full size spare, more around town capability please. We all have YJ's for the rock crawling weekends anyways.
Anyways, carry on. Lets see some pics of this RRS. Not all of us will only consider Jeep products !!

My 2015 Black GC HA blows away the current RRS in the "looks" department. BLOWS IT AWAY. I was parked right next to one in a mall parking lot and there is no comparison. The RRS looks like a bathtub, literally, from the side view. My girlfriend - who is brutally honest - said the same thing.
I'll put it to you this way. I can afford almost ANY car. I actually have 2, my GC HA and a Lexus GX 470. The RRS reminds me of a bathtub. I considered one before I got my second GC (my first was an early build 2014 Overland). I just couldn't get past how bad the new RRS looked, especially when compared to the model it replaced, which I believe is an all-time classic design. LR design language in my opinion has taken a step backwards across the line.
