Leather Upholstery (Console)
So, I am thinking about doing a custom console to be integrated into the top of the dash on my 2015 JGC Summit. I would like it to look as factory as possible. It will be for my Uniden 980 Bearcat CB. I currently have it installed in my glove-box (it took alot of customizing). I like having it out of the way but when I took it off roading last weekend it kept changing channels because the channel selection nob kept hitting when the Jeep was jostling around. Plus, I found that I did want to see the CB and make adjustments more than I thought I would.
My thought is to use the factory stitching lines on the dash as a separation point and try to integrate the console so that it ends at the original stitch points. This way I only have to replace one piece of leather on top of the dash.
I have never done anything like this and have a few questions that I am hoping a few people on the Forum might be able to help me with or point me in the right direction...
1) What material should I use to build the console?
-I plan for it to curve down in the back and sides so it will look seamless with the dash. My first thought was to use wood, which I could probably do myself. I also thought about having someone else make it out of plastic or metal or fiberglass or something else? I just don't know how it is typically done. I plan to have whatever it is made out of wrapped in leather to match the factory dash...which brings me to my next question.
2) Is it possible to match the leather? Is the Natura-plus leather that Jeep uses on the Summit proprietary or can it be bought somewhere? Should I use a different color so it isn't necessary to match exactly (even though everything else in my car is black)? Maybe use a copper color to tie-in the copper plastic pieces?
3) Should I have a custom interior shop do this because it is too difficult for a first timer? And if so, does anyone have a shop they recommend in Southern California? (Orange or Riverside Counties).
4) Also, is there any space under here for me to bring wires up into the new console?
Thank you for any and all feed back on this idea!
PS I have attached a photo of the spot I plan on installing this.
