Limited Slip Diff

So after the fiasco of getting dug in on my RWD Overland, I've done a bunch of research on the truck. Turns out that it in fact DOES NOT have LSD...just traction control which we know doesn't actually help with off roading.

Here's the thing though - no one at the dealership can give me a straight answer when I asked if one could be installed. I also called Chrysler directly and they don't know either but are "checking it out" and will call me back

Anyone have an information on whether an LSD can be installed by the factory/dealership after purchase? Or better yet, is there an aftermarket supplier who does these? Mine also has the towing group IV package on it so it has the 3.9 rear end

Re: Limited Slip Diff

I think you missed more than just the apex when you purchased the RWD Jeep. You missed the whole picture.

Trade it in for a real Jeep. Your problems solved. Even if it might be possible to install a different diff., late model Grand Cherokees are not exactly known for great selection of aftermarket parts like a Wrangler or a Subaru.

LOL that was actually quite funny. Honestly though I prefer not to make this a RWD vs 4WD conversation as there are alot of those in this forum already.

Having said that, how much of a haircut can one expect when trading in a jeep with only 6 months of ownership? I've never owned a car with payments and this one does have them...

If the 2wds sell well in your area, it wouldn't hurt to ask your local dealers what it would take to put you into a 4wd model if you go that route. At the very least it would give you [besides a financial heart attack] an idea of budgetary alternatives.

As for aftermarket LSD, check the local 4wheel/offroad specialists in the area to see if there are any good fits for yours. I probably wouldn't waste money on the fancy electric lockers, but there may be substitute rear ends that would help a bit. Watch out for aggressive LSDs on a 2wd, if they come on too strong you could end up going straight ahead when you are trying to turn on slippery surface.

Might try this guy Google as well to see whats out there.

Re: Limited Slip Diff

There is only one way to get LSD on the JGC...and that's with the Hemi or Diesel engine in a 4X4 configuration with QuadraDrive. You then get ELSD on the back axel. There is no other configuration where LSD is available on the vehicle.

I'm doubtful on any type of aftermarket support for the WK2 platform...'haven't seen anything posted for as long as I've been on both this and another Jeep forum. But I could be wrong about that...

ok this is really helpful. So only on the 4x4 then. I have the Hemi but it's not 4x4...

Not just 4x4, but it must also be equipped with QD. QT doesn't have the feature. So you have to check the options and packages carefully if you buy a replacement JGC to insure you have QD to get the ELSD in the rear.

Re: Limited Slip Diff

Maybe an ARB air locker kit would work if such a kit exists. But with the current generation of vehicles having so much electronics integrated in the transmissions, I don't know if air lockers can even be installed.
