Post Load Leveling Suspension

I've been trying to find out details of how this functions. It seems I'm having way too much fun researching the details of this vehicle that it's going to be a downer when I eventually decide what options I want and plunk down the cash to get one. The load leveling suspension is very simple and effective, and made by ZF of course:

Sorry if this is being repeated but searches didn't pan out for me. Unlike with the QL, the load-leveling suspension that comes with the factory towing option requires no external pumps or lines and should avoid the fate of air-shock solutions of years past.

Re: Load Leveling Suspension

Greater safety and comfort when towing or when the vehicle is loadedSelf-energizing hydro-pneumatic system always keeps the vehicle leveledProven technology applied to cars and sport-utility vehicles around the globeA “green” self-energizing system technology that is gaining attention within the vehicle market
Friedrichshafen. ZF Sachs’ Nivomat self-leveling dampening system will be a component of the 2011 Jeep® Grand Cherokee’s available trailering package. The system includes self leveling shock absorbers that help ensure the optimal vehicle ride height, for greater safety, fuel economy and passenger comfort when towing or when the vehicle is loaded with cargo. ZF will also supply select axle systems to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Benefits of the Nivomat self-leveling system include:

Greater safety: Handling is enhanced through the system’s capability to maintain a constant ride height for all load conditions; while a constant axle height preseves compression stroke, giving greater driver control on bumpy surfacesGreater comfort: Vehicle responsiveness remains sharp under high axle loads; and the greater feeling of control and ease of driving with a load or trailer can reduce driver fatigueFuel economy: It optimizes fuel efficiency by helping maintain the vehicle’s aerodynamicsSaves money: Staying level prevents unwanted camber gain, which enhances tire life when the vehicle is loaded or towing a trailer, helping lower maintenance Simplicity: Nivomat requires no additional on-board electronics, pumps, hoses, or wiring. Nivomat bolts in place of the conventional shock and will provide damping, leveling and a load-dependant progressive-rate gas spring.
"The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee promises to be a benchmark in the industry for capability and comfort, and we are proud to contribute technology that helps it achieve that status," says Carlos Delich, CEO ZF Sachs Suspension NAFTA.
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the latest vehicle from Chrysler Group to incorporate the proven Nivomat technology. Other current models include Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, Chrysler 300 and 300C, Chyrsler Sebring AWD, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Magnum SRT8 and Dodge Charger.
How Nivomat works
Nivomat counters the negative effects of loads, including towing a trailer, by helping maintain the vehicle’s optimal ride hight. The system replaces conventional shock absorbers on the rear axle, taking the energy derived from the relative movement between the wheels and vehicle body to energize the system, which maintains level position. Since Nivomat maintains ride height for every load, it prevents the vehicle’s center of gravity from shifting, which helps keep the vehicle balanced and safe in all conditions.
"Constant heavy or changing loads, along with the unique dynamics of towing a trailer, place great demands on the vehicle and the driver," says Dr. Stefan Sommer, Senior Vice President of the Suspension Components strategic business unit of ZF Sachs AG. “Nivomat ensures consistent performance and a more balanced driving feel, regardless of the load or driving conditions."

Re: Load Leveling Suspension

That is great information. I think it is funny they have to mention the air suspensions warranty claims.

"Air compression systems also rank high on warranty issues lists"

How will this be incorporated in Grands that have Quadralift and towing package? Will the QL perform the function of load leveling also?

Re: Load Leveling Suspension

Yes the QL already has (4) wheel load leveling. It is an automatic function of the air suspension. It has height sensors at each wheel and keeps the vehicle constantly at the height selected on the panel regardless of load.

Re: Load Leveling Suspension

And another reason to get the factory installed tow package rather than bolting a hitch on later....
