I took them off...
I live in the Boston area and am more concerned about being stuck someplace with a flat tire in a snow storm because I can't find the key. If the wheels get stolen in an urban area, at least I can get a cab.
Plus, crimes involving wheel theft are quite low around here.
There are tools online that can be used to remove lock nuts. One of the more interesting ones is this one from Dynomec. It appears that their kit includes metal alloy blank that can be shaped by hammering it against the lock nut, creating a new key and avoiding the problem of outer spinning sheaths.
