Locks on the end of factory cross-bars

What is the function of these locks? I understand that when they are unlocked you can remove the end caps but why would I ever want to remove the end caps?

Re: Locks on the end of factory cross-bars

Two reasons:
  1. To most easily remove the rubber/plastic filler strip that covers the accessory slot when bars are empty which is covering the access to the sercure torx bolts underneath the filler strip.
  2. If you have accessories that slide into the track/channel this is the only way to slide them out of the rail.
