Logic behind Average MPG in EVIC

Does anyone know the logic behind Average MPG in EVIC?

It resets to 0 when you explicitly reset it and then is starts calculating average by dividing distance traveled by gallons used. However, I think after certain time period has passed since reset (2 days? 10 days?) it then shows some kind of rolling average for the past 2 (10?) days.

Does anyone agree? Or know with some certainty what algorithm is used? Maybe it truly keeps an average since reset, just like trip distance.

I tried keeping my own mileage/fill up data over the course of 4-8 weeks and Avg. MPG is usually within 1-1.5 MPG within what EVIC says.

FWIW I have '11 Laredo X 4x4 v6

It is a rolling 300 mile average.

Re: Logic behind Average MPG in EVIC

I use Fuelly for mpg. In car I used the range left, just more useful to me.

What Fuelly has for JGC's, mine is 22.0 mpg over 3088 tracked miles.

Re: Logic behind Average MPG in EVIC

I refuse to buy into the rolling 300 mile average and no one has ever provided a credible source of information to back up this claim.

I'd take that statement with a grain of salt as it's been spreading around this forum like a bad rumor.

Further more I find it extremely hard to believe that is actually the case. I've had my average MPG read in the 17mpg range for tanks and then rest it and run a tank were the average is always 24+ mpg. If it's truly a rolling average I would of had to be getting 30+ mpg for 300 miles. I certainly wasn't getting 30+ mpg and If I was why didn't I see 30+ in the EVIC after 300 miles???????

While I agree that no source for 300 miles has been provided so far I do think that rolling average for last X miles makes much more sense than my initial suggestion of rolling average for the last X days.

Re: Logic behind Average MPG in EVIC

I checked in my manual and didn't find a reference to a rolling average over a certain number of miles....BUT...my actual experience over 45K miles tells me that it most likely is based on a 300-500 mile rolling average. I rarely reset the fuel economy average, but a few hundred highway miles makes a significant change in the average shown in the EVIC.

This.

I track my fuel economy on fuelly and with the exception of one or two tanks the computer has been within 1 or 2 mpg of calculated. I've had a few tanks where my avg mpg was poor at the beginning of a tank and better at the end (and vice versa) so I would have expected calculated and actual to be far different if the 300 rolling average was used.

Get ready for the folks who are going to bash you for "claiming" the EVIC isn't accurate now.

The EVIC is 100% accurate ... within +/- 15%.
