Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on either a lease on a '15 grand cherokee overland, or a purchase on a '15 durango citadel. Leaning towards the overland. However, reading through the forums on here has got me worried about two problems:

It seems the transmission is still not shifting smoothly for many people in certain gears until it gets hot. And the other issue I keep seeing people mention is the climate control not working well at all (blowing hot air for too long or blasting with cold, etc and taking forever to settle down).

The durango also seems to have a lot of problems with the audio levels jumping all over with no solution yet. I know this isn't the forum for that discussion though.

Hoping people can calm my worries or give me reason to run away from one or the other or both

I'm coming out of a 2014 Acura MDX AWD Advance. My primary goal is to save $$ on my payment, but I also have a number of rattles in the MDX and the infotainment in it is horrible. Slow and and clunky. However, the climate control and transmission in it are perfect. Afraid I could dumping a set of less important issues for more annoying "real" issues.

TIA

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

Are you getting the V6 or the V8? Remember that those that complain on this site about their vehicles are a very small percent compared to what is on the road. The HVAC isn't happening for everyone so don't let that get to you. I'd say you will be very happy in the Overland.

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

JGC and Durango are "the same vehicle"...'just sayin'... Durango was just stretched 5" of wheelbase to accommodate the third row seating. They come off the same assembly line in Detroit.

Look, folks tend to complain more on the internet than compliment. Every vehicle has issues including what you've been driving. It's the nature of the industry. My advise is to select the vehicle that best suits your needs and budget and enjoy it.

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

Is there a reason why you are looking to Lease the 15' JGC Overland but Purchase the 15' Durango Citadel? Another factor is what engine are you looking at? I'm assuming the V6 since you comment about issues with the transmission shifting.

I have a 14' V6 for over 1 year, live in Michigan, and don't have any issues with shifting problems during cold or hot weather.

There is a TSB to correct the climate control functionality.

I am not a fan of the Durango looks and obviously I favor the Jeep Good luck with your decision and I am certain you shall get many more responses to help you make the next step.

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

I would be getting the V6 model. I would be interested in the diesel but they basically don't exist around here (southeastern PA).

I was looking to lease a JGC because there is a $2500 lease rebate right now making the price on a $0 down "sign and drive" very compelling. I'd basically walk away in a new car with a check in my pocket for all the equity in my current car. I also don't keep my cars for very long, as much as I tell myself "this is the last one ."

My cousin is a service manager at a chrysler dealership and his exact words to me when I asked him the same question about the climate and tranny were, "Yes, especially the trans. The 9-speed is an absolute disaster. GCs also have occasional water leak problems with the sunroofs."

Afterwards he also mentioned, "The transmissions really depend on the build date. It's a problem Chrysler has addressed but if you get one that was built prior to their addressing it then you may have issues with the trans. Now it's not like they all have issues but we have been replacing the trans in about 2 a week. Most likely you'd have no issues but it is something that could go wrong."

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

Get the V8 version of the Grand Cherokee.

What ever you do, DON'T get the 3.6L V6 version!

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

I bought a used 2014 Limited V6 about a month ago (May '14 build date) and have had zero issues with the transmission over the 1,000 miles I've driven. Small sample size but I don't think the problems are as wide-spread as the forums may lead you to believe. Remember, they sell 200K of these a year so there's going to be some % that have issues (same as any product). I went for a later build date just to be safe since most of the reports I saw were for the early 2014 models (2013 build dates).

As far as the climate control, I'd probably give it a "B/B+". It has worked well for me but I don't think it's as effective regulating the set temperature as my old Infiniti. I haven't found it to be a big deal though.

IMHO, if you like everything else about the JGC, you should get one (especially if you don't typically keep your cars long anyways). I've loved every second of driving mine.

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

The nine speed tranny is in the Cherokee, not the Grand. I have the six in my Summit. Absolutely no problems. More than enough power.

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

I owned both a 2014 durango and then moved to 2014 JGC Summit. The summit (and overland) are both really an upgraded vehicle compared to the durango. Better sound (electing the HK system), pano sunroof and suede headliner, power folding mirrors, adaptive headlights, just to name a few. my transmission experience was FAR better in the JGC than durango, both were V8 engines. For some reason the D shifted more harshly and yes it was quite noticeable. I've been very pleased with my transistion to JGC. I would also steer you towards the V8, if you've been reading both forums, the tranny issues are more previlant in the V6. JGC is also lighter on it's feet.

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

I have a 2015 Limited with a V6. The only "issue" I've had so far with the transmission was one hard shift in a traffic jam going from 1-2. It never happened before and hasn't happened since.

Other than that, it sometimes clunks into 1st if I come to a full stop, then start off with no delay since the transmission is still trying to get into first. If I give it at least a full second before starting off after a full stop, it doesn't do that.

I think the issue is, it waits until you actually stop to go into first, so it needs a second to perform the shift once you do. If the system shifted to first once you got below 2-3MPH, it would prevent that issue.

As far as the climate controls, I have none of the issues people have cited here.

My only issue is the automatic heated seats don't seem to understand there's a low setting. So, in cooler weather, the seat turns on high even when low would be plenty of heat. It means I have to manually set it to low to avoid feeling like I'm being roasted.

Your cousin is a service manager, and they said a grand cherokee has a 9 speed?!?!?!

You might clue them in that the Cherokee is the one with the 9 speed.

Re: Long time lurker asking for purchasing advice

I also just went from an Acura to A JGC 2 weeks ago. Transmission in the 3.6 shifts very smoothly. Climate control works very well to. This is our first "American" car (besides my Vette) since 1988, so it was a leap of faith for us as well.
