If the dog will stay put and not jump forward, I would suggest covering the area with a sheet and throw a dog bed in the back for comfort. If your dog needs more attention you could fold down one seat and put the dog bed on the folded down part. I'm wary of the gap between the folded back seat and the front seat though. Make sure to stop often for a walk / run and water. Good luck with the move!

Re: Long trip with a dog. What do you guys reccomend?

I purchased this from Wal-Mart for $6 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pet-Select...s-Dogs/3635649 and found it surprizingly helpful in removing pet hair with the aid of a vacuum from the JGC carpet! with not being able to lie the back seats down your best bet is a crate or the bars idea, if your dog is hyper normally on road trips ask your vet for some doggy Valium.

Any time I take both my boxers I put the seats down all the way and put their dog beds in there for them to sleep on. Their own smell makes them more comfy. I take plenty of potty brakes and give them a good amount of treats! Works very time. Good luck

Re: Long trip with a dog. What do you guys reccomend?

I moved across the country with my spouse, two (large) dogs and three cats in a pickup towing a car. What fun! All animals had their own crate, cats in the truck back seat and dogs in the truck bed mostly covered with a tarp (this was in June, nice weather!), and I stopped about every hour/hour and a half to take them out on a leash, water, etc... Every time I looked in, they were fine, sometimes sleeping, sometimes looking around, sometimes barking at another car with a dog in it. Had the tailgate up to avoid any fume issues. Nights in motels on the first floor, paid the pet fee.
Made it from Cali to Mass in about 5 days healthy, happy, and nobody strangled anyone else.

What everyone is failing to see is that the safety issue is not just your dog climbing into the front seat and distracting the driver but the safety of the dog in the event of hard breaking or an accident. I have always used this product call Ruff Rider. It is a safety harness that connects to the seatbelts.

I have installed this one;

Only the 'upper' one. Perfect fit.

Did you have to drill holes or anything to install it?

No drilling. It rests on the sides and tightend with steel rods on the cargo hooks. I first had an universal on, but this on allows you to decline and fold down the back seats.
No noises , very firm. Holds 3 Belgian shepards
