Look Ma, no spare...

With all the comments about the spare tire and the cheap steal rim instead of a matching rim...thought I'd post this article:

Some process consultant got paid to drive that $4.4M cost savings to Hyundai, while how many motorists will be stranded as a result. Shortsighted move on automaker's part. My 335 didn't have one either.

Re: Look Ma, no spare...

Didn't have one in my last vehicle, (Chevy Tahoe Hybrid). It had GM's version of "fix-a-flat" combined with a compressor. Had a flat, fixed it with their kit and subsequently ruined the tire. The service manager at the previous dealer told me that I shouldn't have used the stuff to fill up the tire and that it voided the warranty on the tire. (it wasn't covered by the factory warranty) Needless to say, I was not happy about it. But, no more worries since I have an actual spare now, and have a Jeep.

Re: Look Ma, no spare...

I recently bought a 2011 Grand Cherokee Limited and it had the compact spare tire. One of the first things I did was to order another matching rim and tire. If you put a matching full size rim/tire in the spare compartment, it will fit just fine as long as you place it in there wheel face up. And the floor door closes perfectly. To secure the tire, just use a tie-down elastic strap to secure it to the bolt below.

Re: Look Ma, no spare...

I wish it wasn't the case but the option of having a full size spare and matching rim is a) already not available or b) soon to be history. It is not only attributed to cost savings but maximizing available space. In addition, I suspect the average driver couldn't change a flat tire.

I suspect a few other car options that will be phased out include the dipstick, manual transmission and large displacement engines (gotta love CAFE requirements).

NHman

They claim in-part it is due to emission control. Not sure if I completely believe that. I just don't like depending on a sensor. My current car doesn't have the dipstick and has RFT's. Just had to replace a tire that had two bubbles due to our well cared for road system. The cost with installation was $400. A similar non-RFT would've been around $300.

BTW, nice car (S4). I almost bought one a few week ago with the prestige pkg and DSG. I just need the rear space to accommodate two dogs. Audi does build some nice vehicles.

Regards,
NHman
