Re: Looking to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee..

Ahh ok, a couple kids....alright in that case get a new Honda Odyssey!! ;-D that's what we got my wife and she wants nothing to do with an SUV anymore. I'm not joking either, it is worlds more practical than an SUV. Heck, we don't even have car seats in my Grand Cherokee that's how often we use it over the new Odyssey lol. Ok flame suit on...but I'm still serious though :-)

Haha my wife told me a long time ago she would never drive a mini van. She wants a Q7 but I talked her out of it as the price tag used was still too high and horrible MPGs.

The Grand Cherokee's have a really good look to them and plenty of room compared to our 2013 Jetta SEL. Jetta will be my car once we get hers. Though I miss my APR Stage 2+ GTi.....

Funny, my wife drives a 2012 Odyssey now and she's dying to get back to an SUV. I wish she wouldn't because it really is the best vehicle you can buy for families of 5+. Drives like a car too. We're looking at the new Pilot for her.

On another note, seems like a bunch of people here came from VAG autos, myself included. Seems like the JGC is appealing to those drivers.

Re: Looking to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee..

If I end up getting a non HID headlight version...can I install them my self for rarely cheap? Would only want to go an OEM route. From my VAG experience its always best to shell out the money ahead of time vs trying to install them later. Wondering your thoughts

If you get the stock edition of the Laredo or Limited, youre going to have a tough (if not impossible) time of switching the head lamps out. There are a ton of different wires and adaptors that have to be put in place since the sock headlights dont utilize LED's for the DRL's. A few people have done it but the cost of the headlights alone make it more practical to just buy whatever model you want. I think on the limited its 3k more to get the LUXII package (which includes the HID headlights) where as those headlights alone are easily $800+ each.

Re: Looking to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee..

So I was looking on car max and found some 2015 models for around 38K with the lux package. I thought that was a "no haggle price" until I dug deeper and realized that doesn't include tax, title, registration.... Which was an extra 5K....

Seems like I'm better off emailing the dealer sales people, telling them what I want for an out the door price and wait for them to find me the right one.

Ive found carmax to be incredibly overpriced on their vehicles. Theyre sometimes decent on purchasing a vehicle (ive sold 3 to them) but the rest is up in the air.

I was able to utilize the group buy on a vehicle they had on the lot (normally you have to order them direct from the factory). I highly highly recommend river oaks jeep in Houston, TX. I dont know where you live but the 1k to ship the car back might end up being cheaper than any of the dealerships near you for a brand new JGC.

Call up DiJon (think I spelled that correctly). Hes in their internet sales department. Straight shooter, tells you exactly what the car is worth and what the OTD will be. Definitely mention youre part of the jeepgarage.org family and he will work with you. You can even use my name since he knows me (Chad). At the bare minimum you can see how cheap their pricing is to compare or leverage against more local dealers

Re: Looking to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee..

I'm in nearly the same position. Spouse wants an RX350 and I'm sold on the Grand Cherokee Summit.
Any tips or suggestions on which dealer here in ATL provides the best price, selection and service?
Thanks.

Cant help with ATL, however when I was shopping I was looking at some Jeeps located in NC. To ship from NC to Dallas was $700-$1,000. Meaning, if youre able to get a great deal in another state it might be worth it to do so and ship it back...or drive it back and get familiar with the vehicle.

I truly cant recommend River Oaks enough. Give them a call to just price it out for comparisons sake. I was shocked at how easy and cheap I was able to get my overland.

Re: Looking to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee..

Carmax does ask a little more than others for pre-owned vehicles, but that is balanced by their sales and return policies. Some folks find that valuable; others do not.

For buying new, you need to know what the vehicle's invoice cost is because that's the metric you want to base your final price on. It's not hard to get 1% off invoice merely by using an affiliate code after joining an organization that participates (Tread Lightly for example) and many volume dealers will go well below that. If you're willing to travel to the vehicle, that's going help you get the best price in many cases. And you do not need to get service from where you buy; dealer service departments are generally separate cost/profit centers and they are very happy to service any vehicle from anywhere, including for warranty work.

Re: Looking to buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee..

Jim_in_PA hits the nail on the head. Definitely learn the invoice price of the vehicle and negotiate from there. Here are a couple of tips that I used that help me get a great deal on mine.

- Join Tread Lightly. You need to join at the $100 level but it ends up saving you and additional .5% off invoice (maybe 1%, cant remember exactly). Either way, it ends up saving you far more than the $100 it costs.

- Truecar. Youre not going to use the truecar certificate as they will not be close to the invoice price. However, I filled out a truecar request and didnt utilize the certificate at all. After a couple weeks, they sent me a $1000 off voucher on the purchase of my jeep. No exceptions, no hoops, nothing. Just present it to the dealership and take an additional $1000 off your purchase. (TIP: If you get this, dont tell the dealership until you get the absolute lowest price during your negotiations. Then hand them the certificate).
[EDIT: Im sure you can only use the certificate at truecar affiliated dealerships. So be sure to fill out the zip code for wherever you think you will be buying the vehicle. You can submit multiple inquiries utilizing different zip codes. You will get a TON of emails. I recommend making a new gmail account so all the truecar requests go there. You can check that mailbox once a week instead of having your daily email account blow up]

- Large volume dealerships. Any one of the group buy dealerships are where you should be doing business. Theyre used to going below invoice and even more familiar with this community. They are willing to work with you because odds are if you post on this website then youre more inclined to buy a jeep/remain a jeep customer. Do a search of Group Buy Threads and it should let you know which dealerships across the U.S. participate in the programs.

- Conquest Programs. If you are coming out of a lease OR if you have a lease in your family, utilize it. My jeep dealership gave me an extra $1000 off because I was coming out of a Ford lease. You dont even need to be towards the end of your lease terms or trade in a vehicle with them. Just show them that you have a lease and that the name of whomever is buying the vehicle is also named on the lease. Maybe theyll give you the $1000 if your significant other's name is on the lease, either way its a great negotiating point and good discounts.

Group all these together and youre able to get a great deal on a vehicle and be paying 5.5% or (hopefully) more below invoice price.

I'm sure my wife has said the same thing plenty of times. Needless to say she is driving a minivan and I don't think I could pay her to get back into an SUV. Drives like a car, incredibly easy to get in and out of, and no need to even mention how easy it is with the kids. I don't know, I guess maybe we just don't care about the whole minivan image thing. We live in the far suburbs where they are the norm, plus every other house in my neighborhood has one lol. The way I look at it is an SUV has no additional seating than a sedan. It has a little extra trunk space, but really doesn't offer anything else.
