Loud Hitch

Jesus, the hitch is loud in this vehicle. On my Tacoma, I didn't hear anything. But I guess because it was extended out and away from the cabin.

What do you folks use to keep the cabin quiet? Any warnings? I want sort of want one of those adjustable height hitches, but will those be loud also?

Re: Loud Hitch

You sure you have enough weight on it?

It's just a standard hitch.

Have you towed with your vehicle yet? Mine makes a loud ass clunk sound, pretty much with every movement or bump.

My enclosed tandem axle 6x12 trailer is loud when towing empty but quiet when loaded.

Re: Loud Hitch

mine was very loud. I got a locking pin and clamp that help a lot. Not as silent as it was with my truck by night a day different from the first time I towed with the jeep. I does also make a difference if the trailer is loaded or empty too. Here is a link.. if it works.

Re: Loud Hitch

The reason its loud is that this Jeep is a unibody construction and not a body on frame. With a body on frame the body is isolated with rubber bushings. The hitch is mounted to the frame and the sounds are damped to the body. With a unibody there is no isolation, so the clunking is telephoned throughout the body and makes it noisey.

Re: Loud Hitch

I normally leave my ball mount in the reciever due to towing quite a bit. I wrapped the ball mount with a 2-3 rounds of tape on the opposing ends where the hitch pin goes though the mount and then inserted it back into the reciever. No more hitch clunk.

***If you do so choose to shim the ball mount, it will not slide in and out of the reciever easily without some assistance (rubber mallet).

Re: Loud Hitch

Yes I have towed. Nothing unusual.

If empty trailer, it rattles like every other vehicle I've towed with.

The Tape is a good idea though. I might just do that.

I think my 2002 GC was unibody as well, so maybe I'm used to it.

+1.... and as other people have said, adding a little bit so it doesn't have as much play will quite it down as well.

Re: Loud Hitch

The fit of the ball mount inside of the hitch receiver makes a big difference. If your ball mount has too much play, you're going to get a lot of noise. You can shim with some thin rubber or invest in a better ball mount that just slips into the receiver with no play. The heavy cast ball mount I use has nearly zero plan and makes no noise.

Re: Loud Hitch

I discovered the same thing. It is more the oversize Jeep receiver than the unibody. I have towed with other unibody cars and none sounded like this!
I am going to try some of the aftermarket hitch quieting devices. The 2" hitch just bounces around in the big receiver and that noise is awful. You can actually feel the space around the hitch by moving it up and down when empty. Poor design is all.

Re: Loud Hitch

I used these, unfortunately they are out of production now. You tighten the pin and it wedges into place solidly. I do have two left over from my jeep, one steel 6" drop and one aluminum 6" drop if anyone is interested. pm me.
