low oil

Have a 2013 Hemi Overland. just a month old with about a 1000 miles on it. Check the oil the other day when engin was cool and was showing below the safe zone. Checked it today after engine was warm and was just at the bottom of the safe zone. is this normal?

Re: low oil

IF the dealer did a proper PDI, the oil level should be at the full line. I hope the thing didn't burn a quart in 1,000 miles. I'd go back and have them add a quart of 5W20 oil and check every week to see if it is guzzling oil.

Most of the hemis when they are going through their break in tend to burn a little oil. Also it does take some time after shut down before all the oil settles back into the pan. It could be a combination of those

FWIW, the volume of oil will change significantly based on temperature. As it gets hot it will expand (as most things do) and show a higher level on the stick. I would not fill it to the top of the safe zone with a cold engine.
As said, some oil consumption on a new engine is normal.

I thought my 2012 JCG was burning oil because when I filled up with gas, I always check the oil and it was always at the add mark or lower. I even talked to my service advisor. All he would do is refer me to a TSB dealing with oil consumption and say it is to be expected. I have started checking my oil when the engine is cold and it always reads full. So, I guess it is full and the engine is so tight it takes a long time to drain.

The only way to get a correct dipstick reading is to let your motor stand on a level site with the dipstick removed for at least ten minutes. (longer if the oil is cold) The dipstick needs to be out to release the vacuum that has accumulated in the tube while running. This then allows the oil that has been drawn up the dipstick tube while running to drain back into the sump and give a correct reading. It can make as much as 3/4 of an inch difference on the stick.
