Lug nuts

On the previous Grand Cherokees there were always issues with front brake rotors warping, especially if using the factory rotors. One of the things to do to help was to make sure all the lug nuts are torqued equally, which was what I used to do when I had my 1998 ZJ. That seemed to eliminate the warping....and buying Brembo or Wagner brand rotors. The torque spec I used was 110 ft lbs. I'm sure that Jeep has since resolved this with the 2011 model, but just to be sure, I took it upon myself to use my torque wrench yesterday and equally torqued all lug nuts on all four tires to 110 ft lbs. Would 110 ft lbs be correct on the 2011 Jeep? I don't think it's in the manual.

Re: Lug nuts

As i recall, most Grands torque spec was 85-115. I've always used 100 since it was right in the middle, but I think you're fine with using 110. After all, with that tolerance spread, it just shows that it's all about them being equal, and not to a fine setting.

I'm hoping the brakes are indeed better, but I've never warped the rotors in any Grand. Possibly the torque thing really does work out.

Re: Lug nuts

Cool. Then I think 110 ft lbs is fine. Agreed, I think torquing equally definitely helps.

Re: Lug nuts

Owners Manual says 95. You can find that where it talks about installing the spare tire.

Re: Lug nuts

I still think 110 is fine. I bet the factory went above 110 since they did feel very very tight.

Re: Lug nuts

Just beware of the knuckleheads at shops that wind them on with impact guns and no torque sticks. Hand tightening is much better, especially in a crossing pattern.

Part of the problem with the wk and earlier models was insufficient calipers as well casing the warping. For example my 02 has a single piston caliper that caused issues. That was later changed in later models to aheavier duty caliper. Of course improperly torqued lug nuts can also do this. Personally I do an even 100 all around with a click style torque wrench which seems to work well.

There are other sources of warping too, my rotors were warped when I purchased mine, but it was a rental with 20k miles of abuse. We had an impala rental that only had D and L so we were riding the brakes all the way down moutains out west, and of course we had warped rotors and the car had only 3k miles on it. Of course the trans was also slipping when we turned it in. Impalas are not optimal for steep gravel switchbacks!

While we're on the issue, since I run winter wheels/tires, my lug nuts get used a lot...the dealer using impact wrenches pulled the covers off a couple of the stock lug nuts so the standard lug wrench that comes with the WK wouldn't fit. The two piece design is utterly retarded, I replaced them with McGard lug nuts.

Re: Lug nuts

I will continue to contend that the slight difference of using a 3/4" socket instead of a 19mm one on an impact wrench is what deforms the stainless covers on these lugs. Yes, changing to the McGard solid stainless ones works, and is a better value than the stockers, but it's best to always tell them to use the 19mm. Without the covers, an 18mm socket works, but that size isn't normally contained in a socket set.
