Re: Man am I glad I ordered the Hemi!

It most certainly will!

95% of folks only need the V6, it more than holds it own with its contemporaries.

It's the other 5% of us wankers that either need to tow heavy stuff or are lacking a bit downstairs that want the V8

Everyone is forgetting the awesome sound of the V8. No V6 in my opinion can ever sound as good. Some V10's and V12's do, but I think the V8 is the sweet spot for the perfect note.

Totally agree, and this is one thing that might keep in a V8 over the diesel

I personally just could not live with the shift into 2nd gear with the V6. It bogged on me every time, and was not a nice feeling for me. Otherwise it would have been a nice choice. I am happy with the V8 so far. Either way, both are a nice choices and boils down to the individuals taste/needs.

That extra torque gives what can be referred to as "a positive surfeit of adequacy."

You don't have to piss all over the V-6 in order to justify your purchase of the Hemi. You wanted it, you preferred it, that's enough. Others felt little to no difference on the test drives.
Just stating my facts, man. I justified my purchase when I signed my check over to the dealer, not you or anyone else. There was only one choice for me and it was a V8. Adequate isn't in my vocabulary so I don't just try to get by.

It's all in good fun of course.

Since you mentioned piss, I thought I'd get all redneck on you and post this for you to enjoy since you seem to get all defensive at web forum posts.

Looking at that traffic, I'm surprised you'd get out of first gear going up that.

Whatever. You seem to be all shocked that somebody called you out. Man it up and suck it up. You have the V-8, be happy with it. I'm very pleased with the V-6, and it isn't because I've never had a Hemi powered WK2 out on the road for comparison's sake.

You'll get from gas station to gas station nice and quick, with a healthy throaty roar.

a 15.8 sec quarter mile vs a 16.6 sec quarter mile is not that big of a deal... they are both in slower half of econobox standards

but whatever -shrug-

I meant to ask you in another thread about why would anyone put winter tires on a vehicle with less than 20" average yearly snowfall and a median winter temperature of a little under 35 F during just one month out of the year?

Hit the gas at about 35 MPH in a 3.6 and a 5.7 and you WILL see and fell a BIG difference!

Re: Man am I glad I ordered the Hemi!

Here's a little food for thought on the capabilities of the different engines.

Here's a brief recap of the difference between torque and horsepower:

Torque is twisting force. Horsepower is a measurement of work performed; that is, force applied over a period of time. The actual force created by an engine is torque. As the engine revs, it applies force over time, which is horsepower.

Torque is a simple measurement. Horsepower is measured as HP = (Torque in pound feet x RPM)/5252.

An engine's torque will not be the same across the entire RPM range. Generally, a "flat" torque curve is preferred; one where the torque rises fairly quickly (within a couple thousand RPM it gets close to its peak), then stays generally steady up until the engine nears redline. No matter what, at 5252 RPM, the HP will overtake the torque numbers. Therefore, HP measurement tends to favor engines that rev more, because it can apply the same amount of torque faster (the engine has more revolutions per minute, each one applying that torque).

The Pentastar V-6 generates a peak of 260 lb-ft. of torque at 4300 RPM, but the curve has it very close to that point by 2000 RPM. It will generate 290 HP at 6350 RPM. A fairly flat torque curve, but it's still something of a spinner.

The 5.7L Hemi generates 390 lb-ft. of torque at 4250 RPM and 360 HP at about the same RPM (couldn't find confirmation on this). Needless to say, this engine is a grunter- lots of power down low, but it won't rev as freely.

OK, so now let's apply this.

The Hemi is definitely going to be quicker off the line. As the saying goes, "there's no replacement for displacement." At low RPM, the Hemi can still move you. However, once the Pentastar starts to build some revs, it isn't at near as much a disadvantage; what starts as a 130 lb-ft deficit begins to pale because the Pentastar is able to apply those 260 lb-ft at a faster rate. By the time both engines hit redline, the Pentastar is only 70HP shy. Still not an insignificant amount, but the gap shrinks when you get some revs on the tach.

So the Hemi will be quicker in any respect, especially when in a higher gear and the engine needs to grunt some torque to move the thing. But if the Pentastar driver plans ahead by a second and forces a kick down in the transmission, the engine is brought up to speed, and 290 horses is still nothing to sneeze at.

OK, the tl;dr version: down low there's no contest. Rev the engine up, and the difference isn't as stark.

And what does all this mean for real world mpg? If you need to rev the v6 up to accelerate (think merging and passing) wont the mpg drop significantly?
