Bottom line... The V6 can not move as fast as the V8 no matter what you do but the V8 can not match the V6 in gas mileage while its mvoing that fast.

Me? I will take the extra kick in the pants and deal with the extra kick in the wallet.

Yes. But the thing is, you aren't running it up to 5000 RPM all the time. That's why smaller engines generally give better fuel economy. You usually aren't revving it way up.

Yup. It's everybody's own choice. Is that low end torque worth the extra? Some will say yes. Some will say no. It's nice, but it isn't mandatory.

Screw The HEMI - I Want This!

Screw the HEMI, I want this!

You'll need to RTFA through to get to this part.

Q&A: Sergio Marchionne

Forbes: So what’s this about building a Maserati based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee? Why do that?
Why? For the same reason that Porsche sold the Cayenne. I don’t know why Porsche can do it and we can’t do it. Look, that Grand Cherokee platform that we have deserves a Ferrari engine. It’s that good of an architecture.

Ummm, the bridge is usually 4 lanes each way. The pic was taken while it was partly closed for a fun run. It's a 50mph zone.

I too am glad I got the Hemi especially since I average 19-21 mpg on the highway with it!
I had the Hemi in my 2010 and am very glad I have the V6 in my Overland 2011. So okay there it is. I don't miss the Hemi nor do I feel I have an inferior vehicle without it.

Re: Man am I glad I ordered the Hemi!

We drove both the Hemi and V6 Overlands several times and I looked at the numbers. Motor trend has passing times between the V6 and hemi at a little less than half a second. 0-60 is a more like a second and a half to two difference. Either way, no regrets with the V6. I had a Hemi in my 06 Overland which I dumped because it was a gas hog (9-10mpg in the city) for a BMW 328xi which I loved, but felt it was two small for the two of us and our activities, so traded it in for the new JGC.

The hemi has more torque, but it's not as smooth as the V6 and I get 14-16 city with my V6 and I never would managed that with the hemi. I took extended test drives with both and measured the gas mileage, it was at least 2-3 mpg difference. Not only that but the hemi weighs a few hundred pounds more, and it's all hanging up there on that front axle, so the Hemi powered jeep felt less nimble in the turns.

Then I looked at the maintenance, the Hemi needs new plugs every 30k, plus more oil, the V6 needs new plugs every 100k. Since i tow on a rare occasion the V6 with now 5000 lb towing capacity was all i needed.

I would have been fine with the Hemi V8, but I would have kicked myself every time i went to the pump looking at the 80+ dollar gas bill, on mid-grade, thinking I probably should have gone with the V6.

I respect the dual exhaust and the hemi engine, I get the appeal, but not everything is about straight line speed, I prefer the more balanced handling, the shorter stopping distances of a lighter vehicle, the lower maintenance and gas bill.

Plus, I love hearing the V6 (A ward's 10 best engine in 2011) wind out to 6500 rpms. It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow!

It's all about preferences and needs.

Re: Man am I glad I ordered the Hemi!

yeah well I got you all beat. I purchased my Wk2 with the V8 Hemi and I picked up a spare V6 that hangs on a hook in the garage. Now I just have to pick which engine I want to use, just like picking which pants to wear each day!

If I am heading up to the mountains then I drop in the V8, if I am just bumping around town, I drop in the V6, if I need to hear the growl of the V8, no problem, if fuel gets above $2.50/gal thenI drop in the V6.

Its as easy as that

Oh ok I see so paying $78 at the pump will make you feel better instead of $80 for mid grade which costs 10 cents more per gallon. Gotchya ;-)

Im only giving you a hard time some like V6 some like V8, but obviously these threads are going to continue. It happens on all forums where there are different models/engines available.

BTW, im not sure if its true but someone here said the Hemi equipped cars actually have beefier brakes than the V6 ones. If thats true maybe your better braking claim does not hold true.
