Have my overland for about a month now and Im enjoying it. I never had a trip gauge before in my car that gauges mpgs so I figured I would try it out.

I have the V8 so I knew beforehand city driving wouldnt be that great on my MPGs. After 200 miles I noticed that Im only getting 8 MPG!! That was all city driving. Not too happy about that.

Over the weekend I went on a little road trip. Reset the MPG gauge and was hoping for the best. After 100 miles of hwy driving and reaching my destination, I looked at the gauge and it said 18.3! I was very excited about that (kind of sad to be excited about 18 :) On the way home I drove with the eco mode on and managed 22.3 MPGs! I drove around with the adaptive cruise control which was great.

Mileage is a little worse on brand new cars like that it should increase a little over the next few thousand miles. V8s are bad on city mileage that's just going to be how it is. But on highway you can get some decent mileage out of this jeep with the v8. with speeds around 65 and the ACC turned on the MDS will stay on a good bit of the time and you can get into the 24-25 mpg range in 100% highway driving, in the flats to rolling hills.
I usually average 17-18 mpg in mixed driving.

Speaking of mpg and MDS and stuff. What exactly do the different driving settings do does anyone have a link that explains each? So default is Eco mode on. If you turn Eco mode off what exactly changes? Will MDS still activate or is that disabled with Eco off? When driving I notice slightly higher shift points. With sport on it obviously goes much higher and even throttle response feels different to me.

As far as fuel econom I'm on my third tank of gas on my new '14 Summit V8. 290 miles into the tank the evic shows an average of 17.4mpg all suburban driving (no highway, but also not harsh city). Mpg had been consistently going up each tank so far and I also log all my fillups with my fuely app. As of now the evic seems to be between .5-1mpg generous from what it's actually getting.

Eco mode is explained in the owner's manual:

When the Fuel Economy (ECO) Mode is engaged, the vehicle control systems will change the following:
• The transmission will upshift sooner and downshift later.
• The torque converter clutch may engage at lower engine speeds and remain on longer.
The engine idle speed will be lower.
• The overall driving performance will be more
conservative.
• Some ECO mode functions may be temporarily inhib- ited based on temperature and other factors.

I am very happy with the gas mileage on our new Jeep, V8 Overland. First 1300 miles are avg about 21 mpg, that is wifes commute about 70% highway. Got about 23 mpg on a trip.

anything over 20mpg in a 5000 lb SUV is good.

I agree. Anything near 20 MPG in a V8 powered 5000+ lbs SUV is good!

They recently raised the interstate speed limit in South Dakota to 80, and my wife and I typically drive 5% or so above the limit. Doing 84 MPH on a 275 mile trip (one way) and back this past weekend, I wasn't expecting good MPG results.

I also didn't care a whole terrible lot, we bought a V8 powered SUV. If we had wanted gas mileage, we wouldn't have picked the V8 or a Jeep.

However, we got just a hair under 19 MPG on the way out there, and 20.5 MPG on the way back. I was pleasantly surprised.

Usually, I got about 12MPG in City and 18MPG on highway. However, It seems like I got better milage in big city. I think it could be something with the gas since I can only get up to 91 octane here compare to 93 octane in big city. I can get up to 20.8 to 22.5 MPG on the 93 octane gas.

I forgot to mention, the gas we get has the 10% ethanol in it and that clobbers the mileage.

BTW, we have been using 87 octane.

anyone done a few fills with 87 vs 89 to see if there is any difference?

My JGC is a few years older, but I average about 16 in general rural driving and get 20-22 on the highway in summer weather. The lowest I've ever gotten was about 13 and that was in cold weather in heavy stop-and-go. But I'm a very "light foot" driver, too.

I run 87...have never put a tank of 89 in it and haven't felt the need for over 52K miles so far. AFAIK, it's all been 10% ethanol..."pure" gasoline is hard to come by. I hope that changes given the naturally low emissions capability of modern engines and the diminished benefit from using the blend. IMHO, of course...science may not agree. I don't know.

Over the weekend headed out to the Colorado river which is about 260 miles from me.
With my hemi on the way there managed to get 23.1 mpg or so. Half way in the trip turned eco mode off.

On the way back home, again with eco off, i dropped down to 20.6 as i had to pass slower vehicles. 100 miles near home i actually went up to 21.2 ish.

Very impressed with the hemi. It was a fun drive.

Trip B cumulative MPG so far in first 3450 miles, 22.6 mpg.

Evic is within .5 mpg or so. Not bad economy for a 5400 lb Hemi :)

Thats pretty good, but thats gotta be a lot of highway use right? I have a '14 Summit V8 and do far suburban miles with no highway and my cumulative evic shows 18.0. If I drive without fuel economy in mind I think I would be in the 16-17 range which is as advertised since it says 16 combined.
