Mileage shown and OBD-II module

Hi everyone,
Can a good OBD-II module change the indicated mileage on a 2014 Grand Cherokee? I am suspicious of a used GC I am looking at. I know it can be on some other cars.

Can an ODB-II module tell me if the indicated mileage has ever been modified?

Cheers

As far as I know ODB will report the mileage, but I'm not sure if there is any way to determine tampering.

Has the instrument cluster been replaced? If so, then they either need to reset it to the actual miles or place a sticker showing the mileage. It's usually placed along the driver door jam.

A simpler way would be to find out where it was serviced and get a service history. If it was serviced at the dealer, they usually record the mileage. There are also services like CarFAX. I've never used them, so I don't know how good they are.

Hi David,
These days, 99% of all odometers are digital which means the value displayed is most likely kept buried in some memory chip in the vehicle's computer. It cannot be tinkered with mechanically.
You are right, the dealer will have a service history with mileages.
