Moose tested the jeep today

Driving on the highway today and the guy to my right decided that he needed to exit the highway immediately. He cuts me off and enters the exit lane to my right except the lane is backed up so he slams on his brakes. I cut the wheel hard to the left to avoid ramming into him only to notice a car in the next lane, so I had to cut hard back to the right to avoid the other vehicle.

I avoided both accidents and didn't roll the jeep. I could feel the body roll of the vehicle but luckily all 4 wheels stayed planted on the road. However the pucker factor was a solid 10/10. Glad they figured out whatever the issue is with the older Jeep's and their inability to perform a proper moose test.

Good to hear you're OK. You don't have the air suspension though, so I still worry about how these Jeeps with air suspension would handle this type of evasive maneuver.
According to his signature he does. I think all Overlands have it.

My identically configured Overland 2015 with Adv Tech had it.

I didn't even think about airbag suspension vs regular. I also have Michelin premier ltx tires which I'm sure contributed to avoiding the accident. Those forteras might not have fared so well

They make a 2WD Summit too.
Have you ever tried building one. You always have to pick 4x4.
I think they offer it so they can claim a lower starting price ;)

"Overland" isn't a package with this generation of JGC, and it actually is considered a trim level. (Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit and SRT for the current model year) In MY12 when I bought mine, "Summit" was a package on the Overland. :) Now, it's a separate trim level.

And yea, while I wouldn't want one that isn't 4WD, there apparently is a market for 4x2, predominately in the south. So they produce a bunch of them accordingly. Honestly, there's not a huge price difference in the scheme of things and pretty much no difference in fuel economy, so it's hard for me to see the appeal. But they do sell!

There was a test in Europe of the WK2 using a moose test. Crappy Goodyears kept blowing on front left wheel along with wheel lift and quite a bit of bouncing around on the road. Their ultimate conclusion was don't buy a JGC.

Reality is you can roll any vehicle and while the moose test has some merit, it realistically is not a routine maneuver in accident avoidance. I'd be a lot more concerned if they identified issues with a vehicle rolling, lifting, or fish tailing in a rapid single lane change.

While I think the JCG is a pretty stable vehicle, I question the four star rollover rating in the US. But, I do with all but sport SUVs like the X5, Cayenne, QX70, and comparable.

Here are the 2 youtube videos regarding the moose test for the Jeep GC. THe first video is of the previous body style. The second video is for MY14+.

Huge improvements with the advancement of the GC into the newer model years

Nice. I didn't come across the second video when I was researching the JGC. Much better performance than the 2012, and I knew the original test had testing errors.

I think I want to add that I cn't see the new test for 2014, but owning a 2012, I am invested in this...

I assume they don't test cars like a yukon or pickup in their moose test. But the JGC is a unique vehicle in many respects. It is not a car, it is not a crossover, it is a Jeep. I put higher rated tires on it partly because of this test years ago (Nitto Terra grapplers). I track my sports car and feel I know a thing or two about handling. I cannot see how this vehicle is inherently "dangerous". I think the suspension in the overland with the air ride is quite good. The COG is rather low. It has wide tires and 20 inch rims. (I assume the moose test was on 18's).. All told, I think the conclusion they have that this vehicle is not to be bought is quite a stretch. I've never had to really use the limits of the vehicle, but everything I've seen in 65K points to a vehicle lightyears beyond my last (a 1997 tahoe). Real world, in USA, this WK2 is a fine and safe vehicle. JMHO.

I know that forteras come on the overland but I do still seem to remember the 2012 test was with conti's.. It is a european car, after all.. But I guess if someone needs to know, they need to look into it themselves..

What I see is no major difference between 2012 and 2014 in handling, just the tires not blowing anymore... Whooppeee!

Do keep in mind that the "original Moose test" was questioned on a number of points. "There are threads about that". :)

A bunch of factors can affect performance for this kind of sudden maneuver, including the person sitting in the driver's seat, tire characteristics, tire inflation, cabin loading, speed, road surface, etc. Never a boring moment!
