True, but, in the JGC's defense, the VW based product has quite a bit of fat left in the pricing, therefore they have the ability to use more exotic materials to trim weight.

I personally look forward to a 5.7 flex fuel E85 capable Grand, with the MDS, and 400 odd HP. That, coupled with an 8-speed tranny, will be near perfect.

I just hope they conjure it up within a year or so!

The 8-speed will be on the Dodge Journey before the end of 2010. So it's available, but the GC continues to trudge on with the classic 5-speed box. See here.

Update: Spoke too quickly. The Journey gets a 6-speed box.

Re: Motortrend SUV OTY - What a joke!

The Infinity fx50 has a similar V8 engine with a 7 speed trany. It weighs 4500 lbs, and gets 14/20 mpg (not much better than the current WK2 with hemi and 5 speed). If you manually downshift for a planned pass/acceleration on the highway, and have 7 or 8 gears, that is that many more times you have to bump the shifter over to get to the gear you want! If you leave it in auto all the time, and don't mind the car downshifting all the time, the 8 speed may be worth waiting for.... Personally I think the 5 speed in the 2011 WK2 is just fine.

I don't have an issue with how MANY gears there is currently per se, but I DO have issue with the smoothness, the programming, and the general lack of smarts the current box possesess.
It's just a clucky old thing that coupled with the sub-standard electronic throttle programming lets the entire vehicle down.... in my humble opinion

I presume you're talking about the 545RFE in the Hemi powered models. The W5A580 in the Pentastar equipped vehicles is incredibly smooth.

Re: Motortrend SUV OTY - What a joke!

So, are any of those Cayennes more capable than or equal to a JGC Overland with QDII while off-road and in severe weather? i.e. snow and ice, mud, sand, Moab, etc?

A few specs I've found seem comparable when the Cayenne has the air suspension option. But specs don't equal capability. It doesn't seem to indicate any sort of locking diffs either, perhaps not even the center diff. However, it has an impressive towing capacity of 7700 and change.

A quick google search yielded this

One of the most significant weight cuts for 2011 comes with a rethought off-road system. Porsche has dropped the old dual-range transfer case setup and instead gone with more modern electronics. With a three-mode off-road system that can now send 100 percent of torque to the front or rear wheels (instead of the 63/37 distribution of the previous setup), the Cayenne can still handle needs ranging from loose dune or deep snow surfaces to a wet boat launch or rock scrambling.

According to company officials, first gear for the new Aisin-sourced eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, combined with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch—with the finesse supplied through Porsche Traction Management (PTM) electronics—yields off-road performance on par with last year's more mechanically burdensome system.

On a rocky, muddy, and hilly backwoods course—with all-season tires—we had the chance to test the new setup. For one, the downhill descent feature in the 2011 Cayenne is considerably better than the versions offered now in a wide range of utes. After starting down a hill, you simply tap the brakes to maintain a certain speed. Tap the brakes at 4 mph and the system will maintain that, no matter how steep the slope. If you don’t tap the brake at all, the system will hold the speed to about 2 mph.

On models with the PASM air suspension and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), the suspension can be raised for off-roading then automatically lowers above 20 mph or so if the pace picks up. Our one complaint remains that, as before, there's a lot of head-toss in the Cayenne off-road—a concession, no doubt, for its tight roll control and on-road handling safety. And wheel articulation? Well, same complaint. But for a vehicle that is also this capable on the track and capable, in Turbo form, of more than 170 mph, it’s impressive.

Looking at the Cayenne's spec sheet, its off-road credentials aren't bad at all; approach and departure angles are both around 25 or 26 degrees, and the breakover angle is 20 or 21 degrees, depending on the exact model. Standard ground clearance is nearly nine inches, and with the suspension in its tall off-road mode, fording depth is nearly two feet. We tested that by plowing through one very deep Alabama mud puddle, with a long water snake that—seemingly setting just the right effect of danger—slithered across moments before we entered.

I agree. I have the V6 and the transmission seems very smooth. It seems a little slow out of the hole but it is smooth, and once you get a little speed it will really take off. I passed a car while going up hill last weekend and was impressed.

The Stealership claimed that the Hemi is capable of passing cars even when it's parked.
