I'm sure I'll stay with Jeep, since it's ability in this regard is well known, plus it's quieter inside, and cheaper.

Re: Motortrend SUV OTY - What a joke!

Despite earlier sarcasm here, like anyone else, I'd love a Porsche. It just ain't happening, cause we would treat it like a church. Heck, most guys here don't even want to take the new JGC offroad. A Porsche would be the virtual formal living room that no one used because it was just too damn nice. Meanwhile, I'd be in jail with no driver's license, because I'd want the S, at minimum.

We would need another vehicle to tow, go off road, wade through deep snowstorms, haul gear, and shuttle snotty nosed kids. We also would need to start robbing banks just to pay for the Cayenne, let alone the second utility vehicle to serve these other purposes.

Based on my experience with the Touareg, we also need a bit more rear seat and cargo room. Plus I absolutely hated removing the headrests, flopping up the seat, moving the front seats forward, and then finally flipping the rear seats down. The Cayenne has a bit better system, but not much.

Meanwhile, the JGC handled on road much like my Touareg, or the other 4 German autos which we've owned, which is a huge compliment.

Sure, though dubious, you could maybe scrape by with an entry level Cayenne at circa $50k. There are as many $100k configs as those rare entry levels.

Re: Motortrend SUV OTY - What a joke!

C'mon folks...it's been known for years that manufacturers pay to have the "____ of the Year" award. VW, who owns Porsche, paid to have the award. I still remember the Renault Alliance getting the Car of the Year award way back when and laughed my butt off at that piece of junk; it was a paid-for award. Not to take anything away from the Porsche Cayenne (and I have my favorite Porsches and Audis), but who in their right mind cares what Moldy Trend, Rod & Tackle or Car and Dribbler have to say regarding trucks or SUVs anyway? I'd rather hear from MPG-O-matic or Motorweek or even the neophytes at (gasp) cars.com before the traditional monthly rags. Sorry...rant over.

Re: Motortrend SUV OTY - What a joke!

You are right. I'm in Australia, but I take ZERO notice of electronic media.
If I want to know about the REAL Australian Car Of The Year, I'll buy the respected motoring magazine that's been around for 60 years, has high morals, is seldom wrong, and isn't a sellout. They don't give an award for every tiny little niche either, just one, just one COTY.

(i have every issue of said magazine, and others, going back nearly 20 years )

Go figure. MT's review of the Cayenne was a solid putdown, notably of the engine. How their opinion can morph from this into the Ultimate SUV is beyond comprehension -- unless they see the competition, including the GC, as mighty poor iron.

Re: Motortrend SUV OTY - What a joke!

The Cayenne's cousin, the VW Touareg, is becoming less competitive with the GC for 2011. According to an AP report today:

Quote:
While there are some minor updates to the Touareg exterior for example, new light-emitting diode lighting accents the headlights now most significant changes for 2011 are under the metal.

VW changed the suspension, softening it a bit for better on-road driving and lessening the focus on off-road duties. The reason: Officials said U.S. consumers perceive that off-road vehicles can be harsh-riding on pavement. Besides, not many American Touareg drivers go off-road. So, for 2011, the Touaregs have swapped out some heavy-duty suspension components and added a lighter-weight Torsen differential.
