Mounting Electric Brake Controller

Hi. After a lot head scratching of where to mount the Tekonsha controller so that it is accessible but easily unplugged and removed. ( I rarely need the electric brakes) I hit on the idea of the cup holder.
I sourced some plastic plumbing fittings that will fit tightly in the cup holder allowing the unit to be screwed to the top of these fittings. I am at present fibre glassing the bits together and when it is operational I will post some pictures.

When it is in the cup holder, the over-ride lever is accessible to the driver or passenger. When I unplug the unit the cable will sit back in the centre cubby hole.

Eventually to make a real good job of it, I will design a unit then print it on one of the new plastic printers.

That's a cool idea. You could embed the connector in the base of the cupholder adaptor, and... with the catch removed from the plug body... simply push the controller in and pull it out when done. You'd need a hole in the bottom of the cupholder, but the rubber thingy can cover that up afterwards.

I like it.

Cheers,
Steve

I know some people seem concerned that the media cubby obscures vision or easy access to the lever, but we both find it doesn't. I'm happy with it there, it's otherwise out of the way, and can stay there permanently without interfering. Removal is easy if required.

I have a bit of EVA foam to stop it from being able to move. I think it came with the tow hitch, it was on the boot.

Thanks for posting these pictures. My brother has a 2015 Overland and we've been trying to decide on where to put his brake controller. We thought that would be a great location but were waiting to see if anyone else had pictures.

My hard drive resides in there, and when touring I have a tablet blocking access to the whole lower centre stack. I'd rather not lose the last cup (phone) holder while travelling, but I reckon if I keep kicking my P3 where it is now it will eventually get the shits on with me.

Actually, now that a more realistic TowPro price has been established, I'm seriously thinking of changing camps. It'll probably cost $120 if I jag a good buyer for my Tekonsha.

Cheers,
Steve

While this method wouldn't work for me...I use my cup holders...for beverages :) ...it's an interesting idea. I did a "Traditional" under dash mount to the left of the steering wheel for my P3, but will consider "in the cubby" the next JGC I buy in a few years.

And I think that 3D printing is going to open up a lot of interesting opportunities to make custom accommodations in many scenarios, including personalizing the automotive environment.

Hi.
Is the controller only held by the foam?
I saw the pictures earlier and assumed the bracket was also screwed to the roof of the cubby. If it is only the foam holding it in place and it is secure enough, I will definitely go that way. I will very rarely need the electric brake controller.

Just the foam, no bracket.
I did have another piece of foam underneath it, but it was pointless, so just the one to the side.

The foam: Larger bit is what is in there now on the side.
