MPG sweetspot

I have found the fuel economy sweet spot for the JGC. First off it has been a hell of a week. Traveling from mid Missouri to Michigan to visit family for the holidays and then back to Missouri and then packing up and moving to North Carolina. The drive from MO to MI I averaged about 14 MPG with the Jeep loaded with luggage on the roof and bigger tires. From MO to NC my wife drove the Jeep and followed me in the 22' Penske truck. Same setup as before although now we were rollercoastering going 65 mph downhill and 35 mph uphill and the Jeep averaged 23 MPG for the trip. So the key in maximizing fuel economy in the WK2 is to drive like a fully loaded underpowered moving truck.

P.S. I averaged about 5 MPG in the moving truck so that counteracted the good fuel economy in the Jeep.

Re: MPG sweetspot

ouch, 14mpg. I know Jeeps arent known for their fuel economy, but 14mpg highway sure really makes it a difficult choice to still want to buy a Jeep. Especially when I just averaged 27.2mpg in my 300hp 07 Acura TL-S 6mt with about only 50% hwy that tank.
I know its not fair to compare a SUV with a sedan, but when I saw the topic title of "I found the mpg sweet spot", I was really hoping for some impressive numbers lol :-) And that was the V6 too? hummmm

Re: MPG sweetspot

Hmmm is right. I wouldn't want an underpowered auto with "okay" gas mileage. However, I will take an overpowered auto with poor gas mileage.

Gas mileage is nothing to me. I don't drive often but when I do, it's highway.

To keep positive in the WK2 forum, the 3.6 are very nice though. Seriously.

Re: MPG sweetspot

65 MPH + cruise control = 24.5 MPG on the trip from NYC to DC with outside temp over a 100 F and AC on all the time (V6 Laredo X 4x4).

Re: MPG sweetspot

I'm not sure if I want to drive uphill on the interstate at 35mph.

Mostly interstate, some back county highways. For everyone who is turned away from the WK2 because of the low numbers, I do get low to mid 20s in the summer. A combination of bigger tires, luggage, and poor quality northern gasoline contribute to the low winter mileage.

Re: MPG sweetspot

I got a kick out of your method of finding the "mpg sweet spot", Ranger. Of course, the sweet spot for just about any vehicle is around 55 mph. I easily beat the published figures for my wk on a cross Canada trip, including some rough trails around Jasper and Lake Superior. It was easy cuz the speed limit is mostly 90 KPH (55 MPH) for much of the Trans Canada Highway. I sure wouldn't want to be doing 35 mph on an interstate unless I had a moving van covering my 6 oclock LOL.

Re: MPG sweetspot

I guess the 14 mpg is due to the load you had and terrain you were driving through.

On the 401 between Toronto and Montreal I find the ideal speed for the Jeep is 120 kph (75), and if I keep it between 110 kph (70 mph) and 120 (75), I'll get 18 mpg.
A lot of traffic moves at 130 (80 mph) but I notice at that speed my mileage falls fast, so I reign it back in.
(Plus if I keep it to 110 to 120, I don't worry about police radar as their is usually someone passing you.)

I'm hoping that as the engine gets broken in, I'll eventually get 20 mpg.

120 for best economy? C'mon...really? I highly doubt that. Are you reading straight off the EVIC?

No not the best economy, I was referring to MY ideal driving speed (or sweetspot as the OP put it).
No, best economy would likely be 90 to 100 kph, but I can't drive that slow.
