You don't have to tell me, I have a winter cabin near Syracuse so I know all about the snowfall in the area. I also know the "competition" for the most snowfall. Buffalo gets a lot of "lake effect" snow, but it seems that the big and heavy snowfall occurs more in Syracuse. I'm a big snow lover, but most of the people I know who live in the area full time end up dreading the snow. Maybe if I lived up there, I'd end up hating it too...who knows?

Re: My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

So talking about Buffalo's "lake effect" snow.... has anyone noticed that Buffalo already had an intense 2-foot lake effect snow storm a few days ago? I was out there during the storm and it really came down hard. There were hundreds of people stuck on the highway behind a jack-knifed tractor trailer. While they were stuck, it continued to snow hard for more than 24 hours. The cops had to evacuate many of the drivers because they were running out of gas trying to stay warm. And most of the cars were buried in snow to the point that they would be stuck even after the tractor trailer was removed from the road. What a mess!

sorry I know this is kind of OT, but what year MDX is it? my mom drives a 2005 MDX and I can honestly say my old turbo 2004 Mustang GT did better in the snow than her Acura does. though it doesn't help that the tires on it are cheap generic crap.

Her MDX is a 2009 model. I don't know much about the 2005 models or their AWD systems, but I can say that I was extremely impressed by her 2009 in the snow last year, even with the stock Michelin tires.

Check out this traction test on YouTube. It shows how the AWD sytems react to ice on the left side tires and bare pavement on the right side tires. Interesting....

Re: My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

I think the bottom line here is tires. As mentioned on the 1st page a good set of snow tires will make a world of difference regardless of AWD or 4WD.

Most SUV's these days have full time AWD, there is nothing wrong with these systems. Although I do like the ability to go into 2wd for dry conditions I'm starting to see this option less on new vehicles.

Once again Tires, Tires Tires!!!

Re: My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

that was a nice story - thank god my land rover defender don't know that he does not have a terrain select system ;-). You dont need more then a awd and good tires in snow and if that configuration is not enough, then chains or better stay at home for safety ;-).

I have Select TracNV242 in my 02WJ with the 4.7 In 4 FT hi, it is the same thing as the QT1. Only differenc is I can put in 2Wd, lock it in 4PT( Dont think granny will remember that or she will put in 4PT on dry pavement LOL) or 4-LO(granny isnt going to remember that either.

Her Jeeps should track nice and straight and the odds of loosing traction on both axles is nil on the pavement and driveway. It probably also has some form of all speed traction control so I doubt she will have a problem.

OP should take her out when it snows and go have some fun, show her what a Jeep can do!

Re: My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

This situation is getting carried away. A brand new jeep should be more then adequate for the driveway, I mean it has brand new tires too, plus it is a whole lot heavier then a 1st gen wk. I've driven one and it feels a whole lot more massive and stout. Heck they are pretty much cousins with the new Mercedes ML.

I had a Subaru Legacy GT and that AWD system was similar to the jeep but it had a VLSD. In fact it was great in the snow with the proper tires and It didn't even have traction control. Now the automatic Legacy GT's have by far the most superior AWD system in the Legacy lineup without regard to an STI or a Legacy Spec b. 07+ with a Torsen rear diff and stabilty control ,(I miss these cars)

...so surely she's had the chance to test it by now. How's she like it now?
