My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

So I went to my Aunt's house for Thanksgiving and I noticed a shiny new Grand Cherokee in her garage. She told me that she's only had it for a week and that she was upset because the salesman told her she was buying a 4wd Jeep, but that she really got an AWD Jeep.

I asked her what she was talking about and she told me that the Jeep she test drove had the Terrain Select and the one she purchased did not. I asked her which 4wd system she got on her new Jeep and she looked at my funny and said "it doesn't have 4wd, it has AWD." Then she went on to tell me how upset she was because she needs 4wd to get up her driveway in the winter. (BTW, she lives in upstate New York and her driveway is long, steep as hell and twisty). So anyway, at that point I went into the garage to look at her new Jeep. It was a base model Laredo, right down to the small wheels.

Here's my question: Will the QTI work well enough for her to make it up her driveway (remember, it is steep and twisty, and probably about 200 ft long) in typical upstate NY snow? I told her not to worry and that she'll be fine, but I don't want her to get pissed at me if she can't make it. Her last car was a FWD minivan that could never make it up the driveway in snow, and I know the Jeep will be way better than that thing ever was...

Not sure where you mean in Upstate NY, but where we are, we average 9' a year of snow in an average year and 16' in a bad year. My driveway is much longer and probably steeper. We currently have a WK with QDII but had a loaner Laredo with QDI and it did just fine. Her Jeep will be very good. She should however consider putting a good studless ice and snow tire such as a BridgeStone Blizzak on all 4 wheels for Winter. She will then have an unstoppable snow beast.

Re: My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

Yes she doesn't need the select terrain to make it up the driveway. Her Jeep is four wheel drive it just doesn't have a low range. All Jeep's are AWD if they are 4X4 meaning they are in four wheel drive all the time.

The QT1 she has always has a 48% front 52% rear bias. Even if she had the QT2 it would be a 50-50 split if she put it in snow mode. So not much difference there. The QT2 would adds the low range and would only help if she was going through really deep snow. Most normal drivers never even use their low range.

I think she will be fine with her purchase and be able to make it up the driveway just fine.

Re: My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

I live 20 miles north of NYC, so anywhere north of where I live is considered "upstate" NY. That's funny because people who live in the city think I live in upstate NY. I guess it's all relative, but I do live in the suburbs of NYC.

Anyway, thanks for the info. My Aunt was so upset because she feels her salesman wasn't honest with her. She kept asking me the difference between AWD and 4WD. She even tried to look it up on the Internet. She's convinced that her QTI Jeep is AWD and not 4WD. I told her not to worry about it because it will be fine no matter what she wants to call it.

Her driveway is very steep though. I drove my 4Runner up there today and even though there wasn't any snow on the ground, my 4Runner's traction control kicked on as I started up the driveway. In fairness, the driveway was wet from rain and my 4Runner was in 2HI. But still, it was steep enough that the rear tires slipped on wet pavement. And her driveway used to be gravel up until three years ago!

Re: My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

If she doesn't like it, why not take it back? I'd be pissed if I bought a vehicle, and the salesman told me it was something it wasn't.

I personally would take it back, or atleast talk to the dealership and maybe try and work something out.......If it goes up the driveway, then sure fine and dandy, but in the back of my head Id be upset still.

But an AWD jeep should still have no reason climbing that driveway

Re: My Aunt just got a WK2 and she's not happy...

She needs to get snow tires. Last year I was caught with my all seasons (practically new at the time) with the first big storm. My car is AWD. Not only could I not make it up my hill, but when I stopped, I couldn't keep the car from sliding backwards with the brakes on! Very scary to say the least. I switched my tires when I got home and never had trouble the rest of the winter. No vehicle, 4WD, AWD, what ever, can make it up a steep hill if it doesn't have traction between the tire and the road surface, and snow tires give you the best traction by a mile.

I know a local middle aged lady who drives an 07 SRT Jeep. She told me her salesman told her it was the V6.....LOL. When i told her it was a V8 420 hp....she answered that she wondered why her young neighbor watched her everyday as she leaves. Plus it shakes her house when she starts it.....LOL

Wow, thats hilarious lol....

it was funny, the guy I talked to about the 3.6L v6 called it a 3.8L v6, and he told me I was wrong, I also asked him if it was 4x2 or 4x4 and he was like "seriously cmon man its a jeep, they are all 4x4"....I kept walking and found a different salesman to talk to

Sales men are sales men, you cannot take their word for everything caveat emptor - buyer beware.

I work for a dealership and I could count on one hand the jeeps I have seen that were 2wd, to my recollection an XK, WJ, KJ... the XK was from mexico and had mexico plates on it. Yes "they are all 4x4" is not correct but its like saying your hair is all brown (when we all know you have a couple grey ones growing in) *not being factual, Im just saying*

www.jeep.com is your friend, all the info you need to know, if you think going in and talking to a salesman whom was just working for honda a month before knows all the details of every car in the lineup? Does he make sales with "eh, not sure on that one" "you know what let me go as some one"... no he makes sales (aka a living) by being assertive and making it sound like he knows what he is talking about.

awd is JUST FINE, with the traction control on this thing it will do just fine. I havent really done much on the new WK2 but if the traction control is like the old ones, a spinning tire will get a brake applied which will direct power to the non spinning wheel.

btw my biggest question, how do you sign 30k +/- of your life away and not know that it does not have the select terrain???? did you not even test drive it, hell, did you even look at it????

I know what you are getting at with the "I can count on one hand how many 2wd jeeps I've seen" because in states with snow and mountains they don't even order them in the dealerships, but I live in florida and I can tell you that maybe 10% of the jeeps (wrangler excluded of course) are 4wd on the lots down here, we just don't need them.
