My first 1000

We got home Sunday from our trip to Neenah WI and now since I have 1000 miles on the new Overland I thought I would keep everyone posted as to my review of this long awaited Jeep. I took delivery one day before our trip and to say I was nervous would be putting it lightly. I never like to take a new, never drive vehicle on a long trip before a break down time. The first bad omen was the young man cleaning and prepping the jeep knocked off the inside rearview mirror, not a big deal right, WRONG they needed to contact tech support just to figure out how to reinstall it because of some different mounting from what I could gather. From the time we arrived at the dealership to the time we headed home, 3 Ĺ hours. Was I nervous to take it on a trip..Heck yea, Needless to say we took it anyways just because we were so looking forward to getting this new toy. Keep in mind our previous suv was an Escalade so I have a tendency to compare the GC to that. It rode great, very comfortable seats, smooth ride and good acceleration perhaps thatís why the Wisconsin Sheriff pulled me over doing 12 over. Treated me like an 18 year old but at least he didnít give me a ticket. My feelings are that the stereo has a little more to be desired but sufficient. I like the iPod interface and the sirus navigation assist. Fuel mileage was the best I have ever had with a V-8 we averaged 20.7 according to the readout. On a tank of gas we went 440 miles from full to red light empty. Still getting use to the keyless entry and locking. Of course we have had remotes for quite some time but never a remote like this one; I do think I am going to like it though. I have had a couple random people stop to just look at it and they just love the color as we do (blackberry) I am still a little reserve with the interior color. If I were to reorder I would get the black. Not because it doesnít look good but because it does, but I can see were the seats will get noticeable dirty quicker and we have not been it with anything other than clean clothes every time.
Now for the bad news. I noticed the cooling fans just screaming today and then all of a sudden the temp warning light came on, I checked the temp to find it was at 258 and dropping. Fortunately we were a block away home so I pulled it in the garage and opened the hood to find no coolant. I called service to arrange for them to find out what kind of antifreeze and to set up a time to get it in and find out what was wrong. I came back to the garage to find a 3í by 3í wet spot on the garage floor. It was just behind the engine and just in front of the driverís side firewall. Feeling that it would not be a good idea to drive the crazy thing I called Chrysler and they had it flat bedded to my dealer at of course no charge to me. I am hoping just a loose clamp or something very minor. I guess after 2 months of QC they still missed something. Iíll keep you up to date. Obviously I am not much of a story telling but I wanted to share my experiences in case it helps anybody out there listening. I know a lot of you have helped my with a lot of questions.

I had reservations about getting black instead of the lighter colored interior (blackberry exterior), but after what you said, I'm glad I did.

I'd get a black interior, except the fur from my huskys shows up on it like crazy. I bought my girlfriend a Mazda 3 for christmas last year with a black interior and it always looks terrible after she takes the dogs to the park.

QC means it was good at that time. Things do happen down the road sometimes. Sounds like a minor problem though. Best to get the minor stuff taken care of up front. Hope they get you back on the road soon.

I must be different to some of you guys?
I find that type of mechanical failure (the leaking coolant and subsequent overheat) totally inexcusable in ANY vehicle in 2010, whether it be a $10k Kia or a $300k Lambo.
I'd also be concerned about the implications that such an overheat meant for my engine down the track.

as hot as 258 sounds, it really isnt that much to be concerned about especially for the very short time that it was that hot (less than a minute). I have a 2000 GMC 4x4 that has 130000 on it. Once years ago, approximatly 65000 miles ago I was towing a 4000 pound trailer and had a plow on the front. It got up to 270 before I noticed it. I stopped, let it cool down and have not had any major engine issues with it ever since. The only reason it even goyt that hot was because ofthe weight of the trailer and the height of the plow. the air flow was not able to get to the radiator.

Keep in mind that the temps are measured with a sensor that measures the temp of the coolant circulating. Many cars have a temp sensor/probe near the thermostat housing. When you have full coolant this is accurate. When you have no coolant there is nothing being circulated the temp sensor is measuring the temp of the air it is sitting in or the temp of the surrounding metal it is screwed into rather than coolant temp/engine temp. With no coolant the water pump will have nothing to move and therefore no heat transfer occurring in the engine as designed and nothing moving the heat to the radiator.. Therefore the temp at the sensor could have been 258 which is not that bad but the internal temps on the engine could have been way up there although if for just a short time probably not a big deal. ^^^ That, and your GMC didn't have alloy heads.

Overheating of any form isn't good, and is simply inexcusable on a brand new Jeep.

Personally, I'd be pushing EXTREMELY hard for a replacement vehicle. It's just not good enough.

Do you really think that they would just up and replace a vehicle??

Whoa mate, don't take it as a personal insult that I would personally be mega-pissed!

Your 45k vehicle is a 85k vehicle to us here in Australia, so yeah, I'd be absolutely Filthy if my brand new vehicle overheated.

Oh, I'm a qualified A-grade mechanic of over 10 years too..... so i feel I have some solid ground to base my opinions on.

Yours V6 or V8? I assumed V8.

No insult taken nor am I questioning your qualifications. Just asking if a replacement would even be something that Chrysler would take seriously?
