My first impressions from JU

Just found this forum. Looks great. I've been a member of the JU forum for years having previously owned a 1998 ZJ which I just traded in for a new 2011 Laredo. Here's what I posted as my quick 1st impressions:

So far after driving it for only a couple of days:

Pros - Drives really nice and quiet. The ride is really smooth. The independent suspension handles bumps great. Absolutely no wind noise on the highway. Steering is tight and responsive, no wandering. The 3.6 LV6 is super quiet and strong. The transmission shifts nice and smooth. Brakes are really good and the pedal feels very responsive. The interior is very comfortable and roomy. I have the cloth seats but are still very nice. I like the way they designed the seats, definitely not cheap looking. The seats feel perfect, not too firm/soft. The dashboard and instrument panel is really nice. The materials used feel and look expensive and the colors look great (dark and medium graystone). I have the convenience package which includes the remote start, bluetooth, U-connect (garage door) and satellite radio. All work great. All the buttons in the interior are well thought out and feel and look upscale. Probably more to list like interior lighting and headlights and such.

Cons: Blind spot turning left because of the size and location of the driver side mirror and the A-pillar. Drive-by-wire takes getting used to. This is my first car with DBW and maybe that's the reason, but it did feel slightly delayed on acceleration when initially pressing the gas pedal. My wife has a 2010 Honda CR-V and she experiences the same thing. Compared to my 1998 ZJ, this thing seems a lot bigger inside and out. It feels heavy and big driving it. Note that I am comparing this to my 1998 Jeep. I did not feel like I was driving a Jeep, but rather more like driving an expensive and bigger SUV. I am slowly starting to get used to it and will most likely not notice the comparable difference as much. Backing up is a challenge since the rear window seems to sit higher. Headrests seem big and they don't go down all the way....at least I can't get them to. Hate the big antenna, I already want to replace it with a much smaller aftermarket one if I can find one. Can't think of anything else worth mentioning at the moment.

Overall, love it. Much better than the ZJ, drives awesome and the look is really nice. I especially like the look of the front end. Remote start is really cool. Will come in handy in the winter. What I like about the RS is that all the doors will lock and it will remain started for 15 minutes only….for security reasons obviously. The Quadra-Trac 1 is fully automatic with no 4WD controls to select so it's out of sight out of mind. We'll see how that works in winter. I was used to using the Slect-Trac shifter on the 242 to manually place it in 4WD so this automatic thing will take getting used to. Is this Jeeps first attempt at this?

If you are considering one, definitely test drive it. I knew I would be the ower of a new 2011 Jeep GC as soon as I test drove it…..and knowing you're driving a Jeep GC.

I will post more as I get more use out of it.

Re: My first impressions from JU

I think Quadra-Trac I was an option on WK and some other Jeep vehicles. I don't think this is the first year it was introduced.

I also read somewhere (don't know how credible this is) that NV140 transfer case (the one that comes with QT I) is essentially the same as NV245 (comes with QT II and QD II) except it has no low range gear. More details here:

Re: My first impressions from JU

vnbWK2 have you found a shorter (better) antenna yet? I also am looking for one, maybe even a low sharks fin one. I have a very low garage door and don't want to break the stock one off. Besides I don't like the looks of a long one on the roof.

Re: My first impressions from JU

I hit the antenna on the first weekend of driving my WK2 in a parking garage that had low interoior pipes running in the ceiling. Did not do any damage but I agree, the antenna is high.
