My First Oil Change

So I'm about to do my first oil change on my 2015. We bought it used (CPO) and had the 20k service included done at 21k. Now it has about 25k on it. Not knowing what oil the dealer put in and reading some threads here, I'm thinking it's time to put some full synthetic in.

In the past, I had used Mobil 1 almost exclusively. Then I got put onto Castrol Edge Titanium when my wife got her Volvo. I only switched from Mobil 1 because my truck used the same weight so it was easier to buy one oil. Well the Volvo is gone and my wife now has the 2015 GC!

I'm not looking to start and argument over which oil is best, I'm assuming any of the big name full synthetics will be fine, but is Mobil 1 the preferred oil for the 3.6 V6?

The only bit of information I could not find on this site was if I need to get a new oil drain plug washer or do I need a whole new plug? I've never had much success purchasing just a washer and typically gone with a whole new plug each oil change on my truck (135k miles) and wrangler (over 185k miles).

Thanks in advance!

As Mobil 1 does not have the MS-6395 spec attached to it I wouldn't say it is the preferred oil *IF* you have warranty coverage concerns. That is not to say that M1 can't meet the spec or that it is not a fine oil, just that ExxonMobil has chosen not to get it approved. (Strange, but some of XOM's other oils do carry the Chrysler spec though.) Otherwise, you should have no problems using it.

It appears as though FCA/Chrysler has a commercial relationship with Shell Oil and promotes Pennzoil and Shell products.

IIRC, a 5W-20 oil is spec'ed for the 2015 year. Use any name brand oil with the MS-6395 spec and you should have no problems. For a 5,000 mile oil change interval I probably would go with a full "synthetic" for peace of mind and given the minor cost difference with it and conventional or semi-synthetics.

No new drain plug or washer needed.

According to their site they meet the standard. From Mobile One's site for the 2014 Hemi.

Based on what you've told us, your vehicle manufacturer recommends a 5W-20 viscosity and oil that meets Chrysler MS-6395. A 0W-20 viscosity can also be used. Your engine oil capacity is approximately 7 quarts. We offer these motor oils to help protect your vehicle. The recommended oil filter is M1-210/M1-210A.
I just did mine. I have always used Mobile one or Amsoil in my cars and done oil analysis on several runs and even with some heavy drag racing in my Z28 on some of the samples, the Mobile one still have a lot of it's protection components in place.

I wanted to do an analysis of this first change I did in the jeep, but forgot to get my sample. :(

I have had two so far on my 2017 Trailhawk. I got the Mopar Lifetime oil changes and tire rotations when I purchased my GC.

Full synthetic. Kinda weird that I have only had two oil changes but will have had my Trailhawk a year this August.

I switched from Mobil 1 to Pennzoil Platinium (Ultra if I can get it) from Walmart. Last year they were running crazy rebates so I stocked up.

Seems like the rebate is still up:
http://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/promo...motion-7.html#iframe=L0RJWS9OYXRpb25hbDE3Lw==

So if you buy at Walmart @ $25 for 5 qt jug you can get $10 back => comes out to be $15 for the jug. All you need to do is fill the form, scan and upload receipt and you are done. It takes couple of weeks to get the check but I did get it eventually.

Also don't want to start another war here but if you read a bit Pennzoil (now owned by Shell I believe) makes a very good oil nowadays.

Thanks for the info. The rebate is available in Canada as well. It's on sale at Canadian Tire right now for $31 for 5L. I will take $21 a jug all year. Max $48 rebate per household though.

I ran across this on the National Oil & Lube News (fast lube and quick maintenance industry’s oldest and largest trade publication [their description]) web site. Even considering the source, it may be worth remembering as a precaution.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chrysler’s 3.6L Pentastar Engine

A high failure rate of broken bypass valves continues to be reported on the Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar engine. Vehicles have been serviced and customers allowed to leave with broken bypass valves and missing springs. Lube service technicians have seen the loose components and heard the springs when they dislodged during a filter change but failed to identify the damaged components as a part of the bypass valve. The bypass valve on the 3.6L Pentastar engine may be positioned in one of two locations:

1. 2011–2013 vehicles will incorporate a bypass valve mounted in the oil filter housing. If the valve is damaged, the complete oil filter housing must be replaced.

2. 2014–2016 vehicles will contain a bypass valve mounted in the oil filter cap. When removing the oil filter from the cap, pull the filter straight from the cap. Do not rock the filter back and forth to release it from the cap, as damage to the bypass valve can occur, requiring a cap replacement.

It is imperative the vehicle does not leave the service facility with a damaged or non-functional bypass valve, as engine damage can result.

Extended Service Intervals

Vehicle manufacturers are promoting extended service intervals, as it helps sell vehicles. With today’s powertrain technology, synthetic lubricants can last 12,000-15,000 miles. Conventional oil filters are not designed to provide protection for that length of service. Vehicles driven for those service intervals should be equipped with an extended life oil filter. Operating a vehicle under an extended service interval with a conventional oil filter is playing Russian roulette with the engine. A lot of attention is given to the lubricant with little consideration as to how long the filter will last without bypassing.

They were out of 5w20 so I grabbed 0w20 Pennzoil platinum full synthetic. That should be good for the next 5-8k right? I loomed at wk2jeeps maintenance area and it showed it... just double checking

I could be wrong, but all things being equal, I don't believe there is a problem substituting 0W-20 for a vehicle that requires 5W-20. My daughters Mitsubishi ( I know...unrelated!) says either may be used interchangeably when changing.....
