Walk out to my car this afternoon to find my rear passenger window completely smashed. The glass was held together by the tint and laying on my back seat with glass spread throughout the vehicle.

They managed to steal my Valentine One radar detector which was in my glove box. Luckily I had a Console Vault installed in my car so my firearm remained untouched.

The vehicle has been dropped off to safelite and I will be picking it up in a couple days. I feel so violated knowing someone was digging around the inside of my baby.

I feel for you. Unfortunately there are some who want what they haven't got.

All we can do is minimise the temptation by removing clues of items within. If possible hide loose change, brackets for GPS, radar detector, etc.

An additional movement sensor can also be installed inside the Jeep and wired into the car security. Although this will not prevent a broken window. A sensor light overlooking the Jeep may be useful.

Also be careful, as they may return expecting you to replace the Valentine soon.

I just googled console vault. I've been looking for a Tuffy type security insert. I'm glad I found this. Can you tell me how it mounts??

It takes all of 10 minutes to install (maybe less). It uses self threading screws that secure it inside your center console. Minimal damage done to the vehicle and not even noticeable. you can google install videos and they might have some on their site as well

Been fortunate, so far, no vehicle burglaries. Home was burglarized some years back. I can relate to your feeling violated by thieves. No full proof way to stop vehicle break-ins, just deterrents. As said, keep valuables, well, everything out of sight. Friends who've been vehicle burglary victims usually had an add-on accessory in plain view, such as portable GPS, radar detector, etc.

New target are smog devices. Here in the San Joaquin Valley, CA, thieves have stolen them from vehicles parked in busy shopping mall parking lots in broad daylight. They hit SUVs, because the added ground clearance makes smog devices easier to access and remove. Reportedly, the mesh material inside the smog device is valuable and easy to sell to shady recyclers. I believe underbody cladding may also protect smog devices from thieves, as well as, from off-road hazards.

That's the palladium. It's very rare and expensive.

I wouldn't be surprised if you lived in NYC, I see cars on bricks or broken glass many times here, but in Texas where everyone carries I would be afraid to fart next to someones car, regardless takes big balls or lots of coke to break into someones car. Make sure satellite puts everything back together along with new panel clips.

Some months before I moved back to California from Dallas, Texas, a 15-year-old thief paid the ultimate price for wheels he was trying to steal from a car parked in a resident's driveway after dark. (Between sunset and sunrise, it is legal to protect one's property using deadly force in Texas, a law with which I agree and wish we had here in CA.) Controversy arose not because the car owner killed the young thief, but because he unloaded two 15-round clips into the kid. A Grand Jury determined the car owner was well within the law and not guilty of any violations.

I make it a point to try and not leave anything out, but here's my breakdown of what I think happened:

I volunteer with my local FD and keep a small duffel bag full of gear behind my drivers seat. When I looked into the broken window, that bag was on top of the broken glass with nothing taken from it. My guess is they thought that would be a better score and were disappointed with the results. They then did a quick search and found my V1 located in my glove box (but did take the suction cup mounts on my windshield). They left my ray ban sunglasses sitting in the center cup holder. They also left all my work junk in the trunk.

The jeep was parked in my gated community garage.

That sucks man. Sorry to hear it. I had my previous vehicle broken into several times over the years trying to pull my aftermarket stereo. They had a zero percent success rate (that sucker was bolted in) but made a mess of my interior every time. Sounds like you had minimal damage which is the only bright side. Definitely a violating experience. Does your community garage have any cameras you can get the tape from?

#18 ·
The garage only has cameras in certain areas. None that were facing the vehicle. So anyone could have broken the window and put the V1 in a backpack. Even if they were on camera it couldn't be proven.

Management and I are going to have a very very long talk. I'm not the first person this has happened to

That sucks man, sorry to hear about this incident. I've been fortunate in that I've not yet been a victim but it does make me think. I live in a very low crime area and typically leave my RD in a case in the glove compartment, unlocked and leave nothing visible in the interior of the vehicle. The vehicle is always locked however. I should probably start brining in the RD rather than leave it inside the glove compartment or at least lock that up too.

The Console Vault looks to be a really well made product. Do you lose any interior room within the console itself? The other question about it that I've got is can you still route a cable out from within the console's USB ports? Currently with the stock console, I just route it out the side, which I very much like. Would the Console Vault prohibit that?

Theres a thread in the interior sub forum that has a few pictures that might help you. You do lose a little interior room because the CV is slanted so the lock can fit under the top tray of the console. Probably 0.50-0.75 of an inch from the top front. On the inside though, there are cutouts for the light, AC, and usb. I don't think you could run a wire out though because the top of the vault wouldn't shut which I think would bump the tray and keep the console from closing. If I remember tomorrow I'll give it a try and see what happens. At the very least, it would probably rattle annoyingly.

That's a bummer. Back in the 1980s I put a new stereo in my first car and someone who worked next door came over and started asking me questions about it. After that, I propped up a small paperback book in front of the stereo when it was parked to help hide it. At least it's easier to hide stuff in the back with tinted windows although we never leave anything in plain site other than a can coozie or window scraper/snow brush in the winter.

Pick up my car from Safelite today. Low and behold they did not use factory OEM glass. They used an aftermarket brand. They never once mentioned this to me nor gave me any options to glass choices.

I call up Geico. They state that they will only replace with factory glass on current model year or newer (MY16 or MY17). Makes perfect sense considering the 2017 hasnt even started production yet. Ive been dealing with geico all day trying to get them to replace with OEM glass.

Geico finally informs me that they authorized OEM glass to Safelite. Safelite is now claiming that they couldnt install OEM glass because no OEM glass comes tinted like mine was. So now im here trying to explain to both Geico and Safelite that Jeeps come standard with smoked privacy glass for everything from the passenger doors back. They should have 0 issue obtaining OEM smoked glass. Geico is trying to claim that my dealership did it as an extra bonus.

This is going to take a while.

Talk about adding insult to injury.

on the road to a solution!

Spoke with Geico today who in turn spoke with Safelite. They agreed to order the new factory glass and install it. Should take 3-5 days for them to receive it but its progress. Plus theyre reimbursing me for the additional tint I had on it. Not over the finish line just yet but atleast were moving in the right direction

Good to read your persistence paid off. Congratulations!

It's a shame that it has to be the case, but "persistence" when dealing with insurance companies is pretty much the only way to get what you want and should get sometimes...they bank (and make bank) on folks who don't complain or don't know better.

According to geico, this isn't their fault.

They approved standard Mopar glass for my vehicle. In fact safelite confirmed that they received mopar glass however it was scratched on arrival. They had to order a replacement and it would have taken too long to arrive so they ordered aftermarket instead. Safelite informed me of the scratched glass however they never mentioned the replacement was going to be aftermarket. This falls squarely on the shoulders of safelite (atleast according to geicos story)

What kind of dumbass makes a decision like that without consulting their client (insurance company), or you, the owner? What did it save them- a phone call to you and having to admit they screwed up? It shows how little respect they have for you, thinking you wouldn't notice a huge difference in tint. Look how much of your time, their clients time, and their time and money were wasted. :slapfight:

Glad you were able to track it down and set them straight.

As for the unfortunate kid with 30 holes in him, I agree, that owner went overboard. I would have stopped at 29.

Sorry to read some piece of sh** broke into your car, there really are some scumbags on this planet!!Makes me puke that most people work REALLY hard for what they have then some low life thinks it's ok to help themselves to something they KNOW isn't theirs.Reason I get so pissed off at this is it happened to me a few years ago in my Wrangler, unfortunately for him and me,I was coming out of a store and saw legs hanging out of my passenger side door.I walked over and as this scumbag wiggled out I punched him as hard as I could and gave him a big black eye.Police called he gets arrested for theft,I get charged with assault and this piece of crap via a lawyer(couldn't afford what he stole but could afford a lawyer!!),this went on for over a year, finally sanity was restored ( and the fact he had 20 years worth of the same offenses and had tried to sue others when he was assaulted before),when the Judge dismissed it out of hand, stating for every action there is a reaction and were it not for his actions,my reaction would never have occurred.Point being, the misery visited on my family for over a year through my actions have made me think twice before I would touch someone else.As frustrating as it is,I was lucky to walk away from this, eventually.Upshot is,if you see someone stealing from you,you just gotta hope the Police respond quickly otherwise you have to let them go or face what I did.I admit it felt good seeing the thief rolling around on the ground crying, but gotta tell you,had I have known the misery I visited on my family before choosing the WRONG course of action,I would have just let him go.The $900 damage he caused through theft damage wasn't worth the year of worry.
Reason I posted such a long reply is I don't want to see other good people allow anger to cloud their judgement like it did mine.
It SUCKS to be stolen from, but sucks WORSE to get into trouble with Law Enforcement trying to keep 'things'.

Not to justify shooting the kid 29 or 30 times. Personally I dont think you should take someones life for a property crime.

In the heat of the moment, unless you are a very very highly trained individual, there is no counting your shots. The adrenaline dump you would receive in that situation would have you squeezing the trigger as fast as possible. You see it a lot in office involved shootings. The officers will report they fired 3-4 shots when really they emptied their entire magazine.

If the guy had a 30 round magazine, maybe he just squeezed it off as fast as possible. Totally different story if he had time to reload on an unarmed thief.

Thanks for sharing, protect1989. Today Safelite replaced my windshield as part of an insurance claim. I had probably a 9-10" crack, which warrants replacement. I requested OEM from my insurance company, Safeco, and they didn't put up a fight. While I did have to ask for it, they were very willing to request it. I made sure that Safelite would contact me if they didn't have my windshield in stock and would need to reschedule, to which they said they would. I got a call from the tech this morning to give me a more exact timeframe for him to do the work, and I verified with him that he had an OEM windshield for me. He said he did.

So he replaces the windshield and I look at the bottom center and I see the attached. No sign of it being a Mopar logo anywhere. So I question it, and he explains to me that Jeep used to put the Jeep logo on the bottom but they had problems with it and don't do that anymore. No clue, but whatever. He also said that it was an OEM windshield but for some reason Mopar doesn't put their logo on the windows anymore. LIE! I went to a dealership and looked at no fewer than 10 new JGC's that ALL said Mopar on the windshields!

Your story helps confirm Safelite's shadiness for me. I can't wait to give someone an earful tomorrow.

Yep, you got lied to alright! That is NOT a Mopar windshield! :buttkick:

I understand. It sucks to be lied to. One of the first things I noticed when we got our new Jeep, was the "complexity" of it's windshield. I've had my F-150 for 25 years. And in that time I've had at least 8 windshields installed in it. It's a very high profile windscreen, and it doesn't take much to get a starburst on the freeway at 60+ MPH. On a lower angle vehicle that would bounce off with no harm done.

I've gotten into the habit just as soon as it happens, to give the inside of the windshield a good, firm rap with my fist. This will all but guarantee a 6" or 8" crack that will qualify for replacement. I'm not big on "windshield repair". And here in Arizona cars go through a lot of windshields. If my Jeep ever requires one, (and it's only a matter of time and miles before it does), I'll head straight for the dealer. I've had Safelight replace the last 3 or 4 of mine. They did a good job. But for my Jeep, I for sure want an OEM replacement. The dealer is the only place you can be assured of getting it.

I just came across this article that I wish I had read earlier. I've never heard of this site, but assuming this is true it all makes perfect sense. I still can't imagine why they would lie to me about it though. Why not just try to sell it at that point?

PS: protect1989, sorry for hijacking your thread. I just wanted to share some similar Safelite frustrations. I'm glad you were able to get yours sorted out. Hopefully I'll be able to as well.

With my insurance they required I use safelite. They advised me that if I went to the dealership that I would have to pay the difference between safelite and the dealership costs. They estimated it would be a few hundred out of pocket.

Personally I don't think safelite did the best job. The door still rattles cause glass is still inside. They told me that those will gradually fall out over time but I just think they did shoddy work. they also did a terrible job vacuuming. I was finding large glass pieces on the floor right by where the break in happened. Not like I was digging around in an obscure place.

All in all, insurance companies are only looking out for their bottom dollar and safelite can be hit or miss. 0/10 would not recommend getting your vehicle broken in to
