My Jeep's first good deed for 2014

Actually it is not. I helped some lady unable to navigate a corner the other day when it was snowing. But it certainly is the first extended good deed...

Midnight found me into all sorts of empty and scary places. Such as Humboldt Park in Chicago...towing my Subaru using my wife's Jeep. Read up on Humboldt Park and murder rates if you're curious about Chicago and everything else about the city is too mundane for you.

The subaru suffered a major incident last night, with a pulley wheel disintegrating at highway speeds in the engine compartment. First there were warning lights (battery, ABS, hand brake) then lights went out then the power steering went out then the car started overheating. The car broke down essentially at Milwaukee and Chicago, almost in Down Town. I towed it to the mechanic ...10 miles away. Surprisingly, the cops left me alone. One or two cars trailed me for a short distance through the shady 'hoods but I guess clean looking people and respectably looking cars while not breaking too many traffic laws and creating much road hazards...meant that it was largely an uneventful 2.0 hours of towing at 10 mph...

The pictures show my engine compartment and in the middle of the picture there is a clean looking pulley - seen in a closeup in the second picture. That pulley drives 2 belts - and in the picture one is missing, one is loose. The actual wheel with canals for the belts is gone...

Ah and towing with the V6 ? No problems. The subaru weighs in a 3300 lbs. I did it in ECO mode ! I guess in my frustration I forgot all about turning it off but the car did not complain. No abnormal engine temps or anything else to worry about, engine parameters wise on the Jeep. Saved me some dough (flatbed towing money!) for what will likely be an expensive repair...

How many miles on the Subaru? I have one too.

Re: My Jeep's first good deed for 2014

Ever since my Explorer locked me out with the keys in the ignition (zero crime rate here) and a completely dead battery I've subscribed to AAA. With two kid's cars over 120,000 miles its come in handy.

I've owned 3 Subarus myself, always had good luck with a Perrin light-weight pulley...never threw a CEL either.

Thanks. I'm good. 12,000 miles.
My first Subaru was 1979. I'm a believer in them.

Re: My Jeep's first good deed for 2014

I already have a light weight flywheel so maybe I should not go with light crank pulley

I subscribed when it dawned on me that it could be a real pain in the posterior if certain things were to happen in unfamiliar territory--or just territory a long way from home. Then, with the missus, it made even more sense.

Haven't used it since '83 other than for discounts, trip information, maps, but don't plan on dropping it anytime soon either.

Re: My Jeep's first good deed for 2014

Wait, I thought Chicago was a safe place to be since guns are pretty much illegal there?

Re: My Jeep's first good deed for 2014

I am not appreciative of your irony and comments about crime rates and guns.
but then again, my own views on guns are not quite as liberal as the Texan interpretation.
