Re: My JGC vs a Deer

Here in PA, there a people that drive around in pickups and, well, pick up dead dear and dispose of them. They're contracted with the state to do this. The deer are usually disposed of in landfills. In some areas they're dumped into pits on state game lands.

You are allowed to take a deer home that you kill yourself. You need to call it in, though, and get a 'permit' if you're going to take it somewhere to have it butchered (i.e., not cut it up yourself).

No meat is "donated". The state doesn't have any program for processing carcasses and distributing the meat.

Re: My JGC vs a Deer

That's sucks. Exactly 2 weeks after I bought my WK2, I smacked a doe on my way to work. Was going about 35mph and LUCKILY, I hit it square and it honestly didn't leave a single scratch, but did cause my fog light on the right side to blow. ..Only deer I have ever hit that didn't fubar the front end.

Or an elk.

What, no collision avoidance option? Just kidding. Everybody where I live has hit one too. I'm due.

We have elk here in the mountains, especially around our friend's cabin that we visit often. Night driving is seriously white-knuckle time, as there are a lot of elk around the road.

If I could add one thing to my WK2, it would be the long-range infrared sensor on a heads-up display. Would help with that drive.

Re: My JGC vs a Deer

Up here in N. Idaho they are as thick as flies, thanks to hunters and ranchers who have killed off or poisoned all the predators. Really have to be careful after dark. I*bumped one the other day without damage to car or deer, thanks to being on a twisty secondary road with a 35mph limit. The wife, however, wasn't so lucky. Coming home from town on the main highway several months ago at about 60 mph, she was hit in the side (left front fender area) by a black bear, which did $6K damage to the her Lexus RX 400H suspension, radiator, etc., etc. Fortunately, she wasn't hurt, although the bear was killed. Thank God it didn't happen a second or two later, as she would have hit him squarely in the front and the incident might have had a very different ending!

Be careful out there!

Re: My JGC vs a Deer

Don't forget that if you're going to eat your road kill to eviscerate it right away. Otherwise the meat is likely to taste "off." Some folks keep an appropriate knife and large garbage bag for this in the back of their SUV.

That way you can eat the tenderloin, which when properly prepared can be delicious. The rest can go into sausage and jerky.

Re: My JGC vs a Deer

On the positive side, it's a comprehensive claim and not collision. (lower deductible in most cases)

Friggin' deer. I used to live in BUCKS county. (oh yes, it lives up to it's name)
