Re: My little trip to Ouray in the new Jeep over the long weekend.

Bump.

Looking to plan a weekend down to this area, and hoping to get some input on when (mid-September?) to go to see the Aspen colors... and where (which trails to take).

Aiyer (or anyone else) - any suggestions?

The 'urban' parts of John Wayne's True Grit were indeed filmed in Ridgeway...and Ouray. The Ross family ranch is on Last Dollar Rd. south of CO62 (west of Ridgeway). A friend and I stumbled into it years ago on a fall-colors foto trip and spent hours there. It's now closed and even more collapsing into the ground.

I recognized the ranch while watching the movie years later.

tubospartan, Ophir Canyon is the most-fotogenic fall-colors spot in SW Colorado. The trip from US550 (south of Ouray) west and over the pass and down into OC is also fun, but it's not a challenging 4WD trail.

From Dallas Divide looking south.

Ophir Canyon.

Mid-September might be a bit early I think, especially in Ouray. I was near Poncho Springs/Bueno Vista area last weekend hiking up Mt. Shavano and every thing was still green. Around Denver/Nederland area, end of September is peak fall color. So, my guess would be the last week of Sep and first week of Oct.

Kebler pass (near Crested Butte) is one of my favorites for fall colors in that area.

Cheers,
-A

Thanks Aiyer and JefferyBehr. Suggestions on which trails to hit in Ouray / Telluride area?

I was considering taking 550 south to Ophir, Ophir pass over to 145 and up to Telluride, and then Imogene Pass back? Or possibly Governor Basin?

Someone posted a suggestion in one of the Colorado threads and I tried to map it in Google maps. I will post it when I get to my computer.

You should also consider American Basin near Lake City. I have seen amazing photos from that area. I might go there as well this year. You can hit Cinnamon Pass from there as well and go across to 550 via Engineer Pass.

I am stuck in crappy Chicagoland.
I know I know, some of you and most of our wives would take Chicago over your current locations...but I look at these pictures and my blood pressure goes up.

Got the info from this post.

Yea I'm trying to figure out which off road trails to hit. I was thinking Ophir over to Telluride and then Imogene back to Ouray. Or do I go the other way and hit Cinnamon and Engineer?

Or do I head to Yankee Boy Basin and stop to hike up to see the Blue Lakes (google it)?

Just trying to get input from those that have been there. Which trails are not extremely difficult but not just dirt roads, and which ones have the best views. Would probably go for a weekend, leave Denver sometime Friday and get a room in Ouray. Spend Saturday taking these trails to see the foliage, and then spend some time Sunday if possible before heading back into the city.

Re: My little trip to Ouray in the new Jeep over the long weekend.

Bump. Still looking for input from anyone who has taken their WK2 to the Telluride / Ouray / Silverton areas.

As noted at the top of this page, Ophir Pass is a good one to view the colors.

How difficult is Imogene Pass for a Wk2?

Same question for Engineer Pass, or is there a better trail EAST of Ouray heading towards Highway 149?
