I'd guess you ain't seen nothing yet. Superhigh compression with direct high pressure injection and controlled burn can do wonders for aging designs and make them very competitive with diesel other than the fuel-energy density advantage.
Dunno where some of that hardware could fit on the hemi with its twin spark plugs [from at least back in the 30's where this was a Nash feature].

Then, we turbo/blow them...

Ill gladly take my current 98 cherokee with 4.0L that has EXCELLENT visibility vs. the GC terrible visibility and selectable 2wd to 4wd drive capability.

newer isnt always better.
Since having

Folding Down rear head rests
Pushing Side Views way out (see other thread on this topic)
BI Xenon HIDs
Auto High Beam
Blind Spot Monitors
Rear Camera
Rear Park Sense
Rear Side approaching Sense
ACC/FCW
Rain Sense Wipers
AWD
Traction Control
Nokian Snows (for winter driving)

I feel like I have extremely good feeling of not hitting something or something hitting me. Compared to a lot of vehicles.

You can keep your 98 Cherokee. Just be sure to be super human and never get into accident and be sure to only drive with other perfect drivers on the road. And you'll be fine.

Part of the visibility limitations are due to size of pillars for strength and air bags. A 98 Cherokee is a Tin foil.

I clung to my 4.0L GC way too long.

It does take time for the WK2 to becpme comfortable. As do many cars but more so with the WK2. But I must admit the increase in confidence going from my 2014 Limited without half those extra things to the new Overland with the extras is quite significant. Not everyone can justify / afford those extras.

Re: My V6 is enough power for me. History proves it....

My WK2 is much faster (overall) than my previous '08 WK. I noticed most while merging on to the highway or when passing someone at speed. Its almost effortless now. I guess the 75hp increase had something to do with that. That increase was much needed for their V6 GC models.

Now if they could only get their transmission problems sorted out

What transmission problems? They have sorted it out. I've had 2 and they are both great. Luckily both were not early built in 2013.

They have the firmware working IMHO. And there were QC problems on early builds. And probably still some QC issues even on recent builds. But overall I think the issues are solved and it's just them staying on track to get QC up further. Because there still seems a few complaints on even late builds.

I think HARD shifting was never firmware and a QC issue. Firmware is now fixed. The HARD shifting keeps getting mixed up with the firmware issues and takes a long time to resolve. I suspect all HARD shifting transmissions needs replacements. Too hard to fix in the shop (valve bodies etc.) And possible damage done to these transmissions.

I always wonder too if the early bad firmware damaged some transmissions.

Paranoid to upgrade my Limited to Overland because it was running fantastic. But so far so good. 1200 miles already.

Re: My V6 is enough power for me. History proves it....

I didn't check them all but first 3 are old. No reason to beat dead horse on old issues. I contributed to some of those threads.

I think the CRD had it's own teething pains on transmission (firmware? or similar QC issues).

Like I said there are still some QC Issues even on 2015 models.

But you can tell even on the forum the number of complaints on newer 3.6L Transmissions is WAY down from what it was.

I think one of the few links to be most concerned about is GCLimited replacement was ok and now went bad. I had 27K on my first one and it was doing great.

Meh, to each their own, Dont get me wrong im not anti "progress" but do it in a way that it doesnt make drivers "feel" safe because of tech that one day may break.

you mention all those features above, honestly they are mostly useless if you are a good driver. blind monitor sensors? really? just turn your head.

Rear camera? turn your head some more

You see luxury, I see dollar signs when that shit breaks in 4-5 years. no thanks

You obviously don't own one and are clueless.

I totally agree on the whole clueless thing.

Things like Power Steering, Airbags, Seatbelts, and Cruise Control were ALL new, untested, and untrusted at first. Things change and technology advances. Learn to adapt or be left behind.

Some charts from Wiki to showcase the HP increase:

This comparison is worthless without mentioning weight increase. If there was no power increase this car wouldn't pull its own weight.

I used to own '98 ZJ with 5.2L V8 and is was faster than my '11 WK2 with V6. It was much lighter, no electronic throttle control, lower gearing at 1-st gear and saving gas was not a design priority in '93 (which is when that style ZJ was released).
